The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Mechanical Engineer.
Description of directorate/division
The Neutron Chopper Group is part of the Instrument Technologies Division and dedicated to providing and supporting key systems within the facilities suite of scientific instruments. Neutron choppers systems are composed of a number of high speed, rotating electro-mechanical devices which, working in synchronization, perform critical functions within the facilities scientific instruments. The reliability of these systems, throughout years of operation in harsh environments, is critical to the operation and scientific output of the facility. The group will compose around 10 engineers and technicians with responsibility from definition, development and operation for these unique and cutting edge systems throughout the life of the facility. The group operates within the stimulating environment of the scientific research, and an international construction project working closely with both scientists and other part of the company to find solutions for the construction of this world-leading facility.
Main responsibilities
The successful candidate will work with other members of group to, development new and support existing control system solutions for neutron choppers.
Principal activities may include;
• Identifying standardization potential and developing strategy across control systems including participation in requirement definition, market survey, concept decision, prototype, test, and pre-series trials
• Leading research and development initiatives
• Participation in the elaboration of strategies, techniques and methods to ensure system performance, reliability and cost
• Participation in the definition of equipment requirements and the production of technical specifications and the elaboration of technical solutions for prototype systems and test equipment
• Participation the procurement of prototype chopper systems and sub assemblies
• Participation in the integration and testing of components and systems under development
• Supervision of technicians, and outside contractors, during installation on site, integration and commissioning of control systems
• Ensuring safe operation, performance and maintainability of systems during development
• Supporting the design process of Scientific instruments through the evaluation and proposition of appropriate technologies and solutions
• Compiling the documentation required for installation and service for technical personnel
Due to green field nature of the site and the early phase of the project this is a possibility to be involved in setting up of the Chopper development laboratory itself and the formation of the group
Qualifications
The nature of the position with development and support roles requires someone polyvalent with both technical competence, operational capacities and hands-on experience.
• A Degree in Mechatronic or Mechanical Engineering
• 10+ years of experience in a engineering development environment
• The design of mechanical and electromechanical systems
• Programming machine control systems & software
• Participation in development of complex electromechanical systems
• Manufacturing in the context of prototypes or small series
• Experience in leading (small) teams of engineers and technicians
• Previous experience in working cross-culturally or abroad
• Working in small laboratories, workshops or in an international research environment
As this position implies working on the interface between mechanics and electronics; interdisciplinary comprehension and knowledge are essential, as is experience in evaluating and testing devices and reporting accordingly. Experience of working in an international environment is essential and we expect you to have excellent oral and written English skills. Knowledge of other European languages will be an advantage.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
