Arbetsbeskrivning
The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Mechanical Engineer.
Description of directorate/division
The ESS Target Division is part of the ESS Machine Directorate with responsibility to design, develop, procure, install, commission and test the systems needed to convert the energetic proton beam coming from the ESS accelerator to neutron beams that are utilized for experiments. The first step in this process is production of high energy neutrons through a spallation process involving the proton beam interaction with a tungsten target. The fast, high-energy neutrons that are released in the spallation process are slowed down to the energies that are suitable for different types of experiments at ESS, and then delivered to the instruments through beam ports. Key features of the target station are the target itself, the neutron moderator and reflector system, and the neutron beam-extraction system.
The Monolith and Handling Group is the part of the Target Division organization responsible for the so called monolith that contains all the systems that converts the high intensity, pulsed proton beam into several neutron beams tailored for the neutron science instruments. The Monolith and Handling Group will recruit Mechanical Engineers that will take on the tasks to coordinate development, design and construction of mechanical systems in the target station from the conceptual stage to the installation, commissioning and operation. As responsible person for the delivery of a mechanical system, with a well defined scope and schedule, you will report directly to a work package manager.
Description of main responsibilities
As Mechanical Engineer, with ownership of a mechanical system, your main responsibilities are:
• Service as a member of the Monolith and Handling Group, taking part in the development of the mechanical systems within the ESS Target Station and working with other project team members to deliver the ESS Construction Project.
• Coordination of the development, design and construction of one or several parts of a work package, respecting the allocated scope, cost and schedule, as agreed with the Work Package Manager.
• Participation in risk assessments and change request evaluations, through provision of the technical knowledge and expertise on the mechanical system.
• Establishing requirements through interaction with stakeholders and owners of interfacing systems.
• Preparation of detailed specifications for controls, instrumentation, maintenance, operations, procurement, assembly, testing, installation, commissioning, etc., related to a specific mechanical system.
• Coordination and execution of design reviews.
• Acting as point of contact with in-kind partners, vendors, contractors and suppliers.
Qualifications
Technical competencies:
• Bachelor in mechanical engineering (Master preferred) or an equivalent combination of education and experience in design and implementation of mechanical systems and fluid systems.
• Extensive engineering design experience, preferably in the field of mechanical systems and fluid process systems within nuclear facilities.
• Knowledge and understanding of all parts of the development, design and construction process for a mechanical system, e.g. CAD, load definition, stress calculation, qualification to codes and standards, procurement, manufacturing, installation, testing, etc.
• Experience of working in an international environment is essential.
• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.
