Description of directorate/division
The Neutron Chopper group is part of the Instrument Technologies Division within the Science Directorate. The division is dedicated to providing key systems to the construction of the facilities scientific instruments and supporting them during operation. The chopper group will compose 8-10, engineers and technicians who are jointly responsible for neutron choppers systems across the facility. The group's activities are undertaken within the context of an international ESS scientific and technical collaboration with partners around Europe.
Description of main responsibilities
The engineer will participate as part of a small project team of engineers and technicians executing both technology development and instrument construction projects. In the role of 'development engineer' conducting technologies development for the group the principal activities will include;
• Designing and optimising novel new neutron chopper components and assemblies
• Validating design choices and performance through analytical or computer simulations
• Constructing prototype components or systems for proof of concept, component selection and performance testing
• Participation in initiatives to ensure the safe operation, improve performance, reliability and maintainability of systems installed or under development
In the role of 'work unit leader' and member of an Instrument construction project the principal activities will include;
• Establishing the requirements for Chopper systems in discussion with the lead Scientist and Engineer and producing technical specifications
• Leading the design and optimisation of chopper systems to the requirements one or more instrument projects

• Experience of working in an international environment is essential
• Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage
In addition experience would be preferred of;
• Basic project management skills
• Experience in the design of vacuum equipment or scientific instrumentation.
• Experience in the design of equipment in a radiation environment
The candidate working as Mechanical Engineer Analysis should also demonstrate;
• Experience in the mechanical design of rotating machinery
• Extensive experience of structural analysis using Finite analysis methods
• Experience in material Fatigue analysis
The candidate working as Mechanical Engineer High speed rotating machinery should also demonstrate;
• Extensive experience in the mechanical design of rotating machinery
• Extensive experience of Rotor dynamic simulations
• Experience of structural analysis of rotors using Finite analysis methods
• Experience of test and development of high speed rotating machinery
