Introduction

Are you an experienced mechanical engineer specialised in design & construction of complex infrastructure for particle physics detectors? Are you interested in the development of innovative systems, involving novel concepts, novel materials and cooling techniques, and extremely challenging requirements? Take part!

Functions

As Mechanical Engineer you will be assigned to the Physics Department, CMS Experiment System Group, Safety, Coordination and Infrastructure Section (EP-CMX-SCI), which is responsible for ensuring safe and coherent technical operation and coordination of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS). You will join a multi-disciplinary team of physicists, engineers and technicians in the CMS Technical Coordination area, participating in the design, construction, installation and commissioning of infrastructure related to the upgrades of the CMS experiment for the high-luminosity phase of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). In particular this infrastructure will include an evaporative CO2 cooling system with a power of around 0.5MW, to cool hundreds of tonnes of detectors to -30 degrees C or below.

You will:

-Take a leading role in the design, installation and commissioning of the infrastructure networks, for several advanced detectors, at surface test facilities and the CMS experimental cavern. In particular, you will focus on the CO2 cooling and its associated services (electrical power, dry gas, etc.).
-Write up technical specifications and reports.
-Participate in the final CO2 cooling system commissioning, coordinating the connection of the detectors to the cooling plants and defining the acceptance tests.
-Be a key member of the CMS Technical Coordination team interfacing to the sub-detector groups, to integrate the new detectors into CMS and ensure the availability of the needed infrastructure.
-Ensure technical specifications and planning are implemented and followed by other CERN groups and departments as well as by suppliers.

Qualifications
Master's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanical engineering or a related field.

Experience:

-Proven experience in mathematical modelling of boiling fluids and thermal calculations.
-Demonstrated experience in developing mechanical assemblies with 3D CAD tools (CATIA is a plus).
-Initial experience in writing technical specifications, planning and coordinating the fabrication, qualification and installation of mechanical systems or detectors' infrastructure, in particular of low temperature cooling systems (down to -40oC).
-Experience in operation of CO2 cooling systems, including safety requirements and procedures is a plus.

Technical competencies:

-Simulation, design and development of infrastructure for detectors or experimental facilities.
-Knowledge and application of numerical modelling in fluid mechanics and/or heat transfer.
-Integration of mechanical systems: capability to develop and validate manufacturing and installation methods.
-Production of 2D drawings and 3D models: proficiency in Catia V5 or equivalent 3D modelling software, good knowledge of drawing annotations.
-Assembly and integration of infrastructure for detectors or experimental facilities.

Language skills:

-Spoken and written English: ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations.
-Ability to understand and speak French in professional contexts would be an advantage.

-Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.
-Shift work, when required by the needs of the Organization.
