Mechanical Engineer (cooling, integration and infrastructure for detectors)

Arbetsbeskrivning

Company Description
At CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, physicists and engineers are probing the fundamental structure of the universe. Using the world's largest and most complex scientific instruments, they study the basic constituents of matter - fundamental particles that are made to collide together at close to the speed of light. The process gives physicists clues about how particles interact, and provides insights into the fundamental laws of nature. Find out more on http://home.cern.

Job Description
Introduction
Are you an experienced mechanical engineer specialised in design, construction and integration of complex infrastructure for particle physics detectors? Are you interested in the development of innovative systems, involving novel concepts, novel materials and cooling techniques, and extremely challenging requirements? Take part!

Functions
As Mechanical Engineer you will be assigned to the Physics Department, CMS Experiment System Group, Engineering and Integration section (EP-CMX-EI), which is responsible for ensuring safe and coherent technical operation and coordination of the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS). You will join a multi-disciplinary team of physicists, engineers and technicians in the CMS Technical Coordination area, participating in the design, construction, installation, integration and commissioning of new detectors and their infrastructure in the framework of the upgrades of the CMS experiment for the high-luminosity phase of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). The upgrades include large-area gas-based detectors using GEM technology as well as cutting-edge detectors, based on silicon, scintillator tiles or LGADs, that will operate at -30 degrees (or lower), using evaporative CO2 as coolant.

You will:
Contribute to the functioning of the CMS Engineering & Integration Office, by participating in multiple concurrent projects and tasks.
Participate in the design, installation, procurement and commissioning of detector services in the CMS experimental area and on the CMS detector.
Take a leading role in the design, construction and exploitation of services mock-ups.
Write up technical specifications and reports.
And, depending on your suitability, either:
Work closely with the detector communities to participate in the global study for the decommissioning of existing detector services, and installation of new services, in view of the LHC Long Shutdown 3 (2025-2027)
Take a leading role in the definition of the services map for the completely-new endcap detector sub-systems for the CMS detector Phase 2 Upgrade.
Or

Take a leading role in the design, prototyping, and construction of the mechanical support structure and the integrated services for the Endcap Timing Layer (ETL) and work with collaborators to review and optimize its design.
Provide support for the Endcap Timing Layer assembly and commissioning activities, focusing on mechanical and thermal aspects, ensuring service availability and connectivity in the assembly and test area (cooling, electricity, dry gases, mechanical pieces, including fabrication and testing).
Participate in the CMS upgrade CO2 system commissioning, coordinating the connection of the ETL detector to the cooling plants and defining the acceptance tests.

Qualifications
Master's degree or PhD or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanical engineering or a related field.

Experience:
Demonstrated experience in integration of complex systems.
Demonstrated experience in developing mechanical assemblies with 3D CAD tools (CATIA is a plus) and the associated assembly/testing of prototypes.
Demonstrated experience in performing thermal and structural calculations of complex mechanical structures with finite-element analysis (ANSYS is a plus).
Initial experience in writing technical specifications, planning and coordinating the fabrication, qualification and installation of mechanical systems or detectors' infrastructure.
Initial experience in design and operation of low temperature cooling systems (down to -40°C) would be an asset.

Technical competencies:
Design and analysis of mechanical structures.
Knowledge and application of numerical modelling in solid mechanics.
Integration of mechanical systems: capability to develop and validate manufacturing and installation methods.
Production of 2D drawings and 3D models: proficiency in Catia V5 or equivalent 3D modelling software, good knowledge of drawing annotations.
Design and installation of infrastructure for detectors or experimental facilities.

Behavioural competencies:
Working in teams: understanding when teamwork is required to achieve the best results; including others accordingly and sharing information.
Demonstrating flexibility: actively participating in the implementation of new processes and technologies; demonstrating openness to new ideas and situations; being willing to work on different projects simultaneously.
Achieving results: having a structured and organised approach towards work; being able to set priorities and plan tasks with results in mind.
Communicating effectively: expressing opinions, ideas and suggestions with conviction and in a logical/structured manner; keeping to the point; delivering presentations in a structured and clear way; adjusting style and content to the audience; responding calmly and confidently to questions.
Solving problems: identifying, defining and assessing problems, taking action to address them; finding the information needed to solve problems; making objective judgments based on all the facts available; producing workable and timely solutions that meet requirements.

Language skills:
Spoken and written English: ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations. Ability to understand and speak French in professional contexts would be an advantage.

Eligibility and closing date:
Diversity has been an integral part of CERN's mission since its foundation and is an established value of the Organization. Employing a diverse workforce is central to our success. We welcome applications from all Member States and Associate Member States.

Employment Conditions
These functions require:
Work in Radiation Areas.
Interventions in underground installations.
A valid driving licence is required.
Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.
Shift work, when required by the needs of the Organization.
