The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is Europe's leading research facility for fundamental research using neutrons. The ILL operates the brightest neutron source in the world, and receives over 2000 visits every year, from scientists coming to carry out world-class research in a wide variety of scientific fields. Funded primarily by its 3 founder members, France, Germany and the United Kingdom, the ILL has also signed scientific collaboration agreements with 12 other European countries.

Mechanical Engineer - Project leader
Duties:
As a member of the ILL's Projects and Techniques Division it will be your responsibility to lead the ILL's efforts to develop scientific instruments, from design to operation. Reporting to the head of the Mechanical service of the experimental halls you will collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary project team (mechanics, electronics, neutron optics, detectors, health physics, civil engineering, etc.). Your duties will be to:
.guarantee the quality, timing and cost control of your projects
.define the scope and specifications of the projects with the science team, and determine the goals in terms of instrument performance
.perform the feasibility studies with the project team and decide on the main technical options, costs and timelines
.supervise the different project phases: design, manufacture, installation, adjustments and bringing into service of the instruments in the experimental halls
.lead the team of mechanical designers: finite-element design calculations for the various structures
.manage the sub-contracted manufacturing phase: call for tenders, launch of manufacture, progress monitoring, controls, final acceptance, non-conformance checks, etc.
.lead the project team, liaise with the relevant heads of service, organise project reviews, reporting.
Qualifications and experience:
.You have a Master-level degree (or equivalent engineering qualification) specialising in mechanical engineering, and five to ten years at least of experience in mechanical design.
.You are familiar with scientific instrumentation and/or operations within a large-scale research facility such as the ILL would be an advantage.
.We are looking for strong practical experience and a pragmatic, results-oriented approach.
.You should have a taste for teamwork and be recognised for your qualities of leadership.
Language skills:
As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must have good knowledge of English and some French. Knowledge of German would be an advantage.
