The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, and founded by France, Germany and the United Kingdom, is Europe's leading research facility for fundamental research using neutrons. The ILL operates the brightest neutron source in the world. The Reactor Division, whose role is to produce the neutrons needed to supply the ILL's scientific instruments, is responsible for operating all the technical installations associated with the reactor. The Reactor Division currently has a vacancy for a:
Mechanical engineering and maintenance technician
Duties:
You will join the Reactor Division's Fluids group, which is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the
reactor's fluids systems and associated mechanical equipment (pumps, valves, compressors, etc.), as well as the liquid effluent treatment plants (also known as 'effluent discharge stations'). The group's activities also include performing chemical analyses and managing welding operations on the above equipment. Working with the other technicians in the group, you will primarily be responsible for the start-up, operation and monitoring of the reactor's light water installations and the two radioactive liquid effluent treatment plants.
Your duties will include:
- Operating, maintaining and repairing the above equipment
- Monitoring work carried out by subcontractors
- Performing statutory periodic tests and inspections
- Drafting procedures, technical specifications, P&IDs, reports, etc. in complaince with the ILL's Integrated
Management System
- Assisting on an occasional basis with the operation of the other equipment under the responsibility of the
Fluids group.
You will interface with a number of other ILL services (electricity and electronics, reactor operation, and health
physics, safety and environment services). In this post, you must be able to assume a high level of autonomy
quickly.
Qualifications and experience:
- Level 4/5 qualification (e.g. BTEC HNC/HND or equivalent) in mechanical engineering or industrial
maintenance, together with at least 5 years' professional experience in industrial maintenance
- Experience in maintaining pumping systems and ability to perform simple fluid mechanics calculations
- Experience of working within a quality assurance framework
- Excellent writing skills (for the drafting of procedures, technical specifications, technical reports)
- You have a "hands-on" approach to your work and a very high level of autonomy with strong analytical
skills
- Team spirit, versatility and the ability to show initiative.
Language skills:
As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from
outside France. You must have a sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French (a language course will be paid for by the ILL). Knowledge of German would be an advantage.

This post is a full-time permanent position.
Post based in Grenoble and subject to administrative screening and medical fitness for work under ionising radiation.
This positon involves performing an emergency response role in the event of a crisis.
