VACANCY
The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, and founded by France, Germany and the United Kingdom, is Europe's leading research facility for fundamental research using neutrons. The ILL operates the brightest neutron source in the world. The Reactor Division, whose role is to produce the neutrons needed to supply the ILL's scientific instruments, is responsible for operating all the technical installations associated with the reactor. The Reactor Division currently has a vacancy for a:
Mechanical Operations Technician
Duties:
You will join one of the six shift teams in the ILL's Operations Service responsible for reactor operations. Each team comprises a shift leader and four operations technicians.
Your main duties as operations technician, under the supervision of a team leader (shift leader), will be to:
- Monitor the state of the installations and systems and their compliance with operational limits and conditions (technical specifications for operation).
- Diagnose any faults, and identify the corrective action to be taken.
- Ensure the safe shutdown of the reactor installations, to allow for maintenance operations.
- Prepare and conduct periodic inspections, and testing prior to reactor start-up.
- Prepare and maintain operational documentation (procedures, instructions, etc.).
- Design and carry out modifications to improve operating conditions.
You will be required to work round-the-clock shifts on a rota basis (2 x 12h).
Qualifications and experience:
- Level 4 qualification (NVQ, BTEC HND for example) in a field such as industrial engineering and maintenance, mechanical and thermal engineering, mechanical and production engineering or equivalent, with at least two or three years' experience in an industrial setting.
- You should be organised and methodical in your work and able to work independently, with good writing skills. You are used to working alone or in a team. You have a strong service-oriented attitude, and are able to take initiative while complying with regulatory requirements.
- Practical experience with operations in an industrial risk environment would be an advantage.
- Further assets would be a good sense of diplomacy and a capacity to adapt as required. We are looking for good judgement and the ability to work under stress.
Language skills:
As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must be fluent in French and have a sound command of English. Knowledge of German would be an advantage.

This positon involves performing an emergency response role in the event of a crisis. Post based in Grenoble and subject to administrative screening.
