As a Mechanical Safety Technical Engineer, you will join the HSE unit, which supports CERN in the implementation and application of its safety policy. The OHS Group, which is in charge of providing advice, monitoring and following-up on the implementation and accomplishment of safety objectives, aimed at a continuous improvement of a safe working environment. As a Mechanical Safety Technical Engineer in the Process Engineering & General Safety Services (PE) Section of the Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) Group, you will join a multidisciplinary team of Safety experts, covering several engineering domains.


Functions
The job covers aspects such as mechanical safety, risk assessment, safety in projects, inspection and safety verification.

You will:
- Provide technical advice, training and support in the mechanical safety domain, in particular for lifting and handling equipment, and machinery;
- Plan and perform safety inspection and verifications on installations and activities;
- Provide support in technical reviews, audits, risk assessment and projects;
- Check the conformity to safety requirements of engineering and tendering specifications;
- Write CERN Safety documentation including rules, instructions and guidelines;
- Contribute to the improvement and implementation of assessment tools and methodologies;
- Provide assurance that contractors' activities comply with the HSE rules in force at CERN and in the Host States.

Qualifications
Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience in the field of mechanical engineering or a related field.

Experience:

The experience required for this post is:
- Extensive experience in defining, planning and performing mechanical safety inspections and verifications in complex industrial facilities;
- Demonstrated experience in providing advice and support on lifting and handling equipment, and machinery, including the use of related European Directives and standards.

Technical competencies:
- Occupational safety and risk management: knowledge of mechanical safety risks
- Safety conformity assessment: knowledge of inspection techniques and risk assessment tools applicable to complex infrastructure and facilities
- Safety conformity assessment: knowledge of Auditing and Certification
- Design and construction of lifting and handling equipment: , and machinery
- Installation and commissioning of lifting and handling equipment: , and machinery
- Operation and maintenance of lifting and handling equipment: , and machinery

Spoken and written English or French: ability to understand and speak in professional contexts. Ability to draw-up technical specifications and/or scientific reports and to make oral presentations in at least one of the two languages. And an undertaking to acquire the other langauge rapidly.

Employment Conditions

Contract type:
Limited duration contract (5 years). Subject to certain conditions, holders of limited-duration contracts may apply for an indefinite position.

These functions require:
- Work in Radiation Areas.
- Interventions in underground installations.
- A valid driving license is required.
- Work during nights, Sundays and official holidays, when required by the needs of the Organization.
