Mechanical Technician

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is Europe's leading research facility for fundamental research using neutrons. The ILL operates the brightest neutron source in the world, and receives over 2000 visits every year, from scientists coming to carry out world-class research in a wide variety of scientific fields. Funded primarily by its 3 founder members, France, Germany and the United Kingdom, the ILL has also signed scientific collaboration agreements with 12 other European countries. Mechanical Technician

Duties:
As a member of the Mechanical Group of the ILL's Neutron Detector Service you will be working on the production of different types of neutron detector, within the Endurance programme in particular, responsible for the renewal of the Institute's scientific instrumentation. Your main duties will be to:

- control the manufacture, reception and control of mechanical parts,
- carry out detector mechanical assembly operations:
* tin-based solders on circuit board components
* ultra-sonic cleaning
* soldering of 15-micron anode wires
* assembly of mechanical components
* ultra-high vacuum pumping and detection of leaks with a mass spectrometer
* metrology
- perform electrical tests at low-voltage on detectors,
- write reports and assembly instructions,
- report any anomalies detected during inspections to the head of the Mechanical Group
- perform maintenance operations on the Service's detectors and other equipment.

Qualifications and experience:
- Level 4 qualification (NVQ, BTEC HND or equivalent) in mechanical engineering, or in a technical metallurgy-related discipline.
- Initial experience in soldering/welding and assembly.
- A capacity for precision and a disciplined approach to work.
- Team spirit.

Language skills:
As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must have a sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French if necessary (a language course will be paid for by the ILL). Knowledge of German would be an advantage.
