The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source Eric in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Mechanical Workshop Technician.
Description of directorate/division
During ESS construction, SAD is responsible for the scientific support laboratories, sample environment and user office. In this SAD helps setting the policies on designing, building and operating a science driven experimental facility.
This position is within the Scientific Activities Division (SAD), which will support future ESS users in carrying out world leading scientific experiments. Within ESS the sample environment platforms provide the technical competence to build and operate sample environment to provide the relevant parameters such as temperature, magnetic and other fields, pressures but also other parameters to the samples to be investigated on the neutron instrument. During the ESS construction phase SAD is building the infrastructure and capabilities needed for this task.
Description of main responsibilities
The person chosen for the job will be working closely with the responsible of the sample environment platforms. The job involves:
• Mechanical assembly, testing and maintenance of a wide variety of systems including cryogenic, vacuum and pressure devices.
• Management of a laboratory space, including organisation and maintenance of consumables.
• Maintaining a safe working environment.
• Machine work, including use of lathes, milling machines and similar tasks.
• Basic technical design, and interfacing with external workshops.
A pro-active way of working and excellent communication skills are essential. Excellent skills in interacting with people are essential.
Qualifications
You have successfully completed a mechanical technical training and at least 3 years of experience in a position requiring similar skills. Self-motivation, good organisational skills and an ability to work independently is required. This position requires hands-on experience and strong practical skills. Training and experience in machine shop work is required with a high regard for precision and quality of workmanship. Experience with CAD is an advantage.
ESS is currently a construction project, but in time will become a user oriented facility catering to external scientists, therefore a commitment to good service and understanding the needs of others is essential. The candidate should be prepared to spend a significant period abroad as part of their training. As part of an international facility the working language is English, but knowledge of Swedish is an advantage.
