Arbetsbeskrivning
Volvo Group is a world leading company within transport solutions, such as trucks, busses, and construction equipment. The heavy transport sector has a lot of challenges ahead and we believe that metallic materials is an enabler to reach the tough goals Volvo group has set in terms of environmental footprint.
At Volvo Materials technology we provide Volvo Group with world-class knowledge within metallic materials. In total we are about 35 engineers and technical doctors within materials science and related subjects. Together with other engineers around the world, we work towards the goal of making the developing the next generation sustainable transport solutions.
Are you interested in Metal Additive Manufacturing? Are you passionate about metallic materials? Do you like hands-on laboratory work combined with a theoretical approach? Then this Master thesis is definitely for you!
Background and aim
Additive manufacturing has recently taken the step to go from being used as prototypes to also be used for e.g. small series production. This is enabled by the rapid development of the technique, but also by new materials that are better adapted for the automotive industry.
In this project we are studying how different post-processing steps of additively manufactured parts influences the mechanical properties and microstructure.
Description
The purpose of the project is to assess the influence of post-processing on the properties and microstructure of AM-parts (steel). The parts are made by the SLM-technique (Selective Laser Melting) and are in ‘as-printed condition’ at this stage.
The thesis work will comprise of, among others:
Literature review
Conduct and/or analyse different post-processing operations
Take part in residual stress measurement
Conduct metallographic analyses (and some mechanical testing)
The project is a mix of theoretical and practical work, and you will be a part or a creative environment with skilled and experiences colleagues at our well-equipped materials technology lab in Gothenburg.
The student will be placed at Volvo Materials Technology in the Lundby area, Göteborg. Cooperation with university/institute is also encouraged.
Suitable background
We seek one student, preferably in Material Science, Mechanical engineering, or equal background. Analytical mindset, able to work hands on in the lab and ability to cooperate are prerequisites.
