The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden invites applications for a post doc position within the Superconducting Radio Frequency (SRF) linac, in the Accelerator Division.

Description of division
The Superconducting Radio Frequency Section in the Accelerator Division is responsible for all the SRF accelerator modules of the ESS facility. The SRF section operates with other ESS units and the Project in-kind partners to receive, test, install and commission the SRF accelerator components, and to bring them into operation in the linear accelerator.


Description of main responsibilities
The successful candidate will be working on the integration, testing, installation and commissioning of the superconducting linac components. The candidate will deal with a broad range of challenging problems involving cryomodules, SRF cavities and related structures (power couplers, tuners, etc.).

Tasks include


• Assistance in the preparation, execution and evaluation of the Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) of the ESS cryomodules, both at ESS and at Uppsala.
• Assistance in the evaluation of the SAT outcomes. Act as an interface with the ESS Beam Physics Group to assign the CM location in the linac, provide the performance data and assess the operational envelopes of each of the installed CM.
• Participate in the development and the execution of the automation tools, through scripts or EPICS IOCs, used during the Site Acceptance Test (SAT) of the cryomodules.
• Work in the laboratory of the SRF Section for the development and deployment of instrumentation setups and procedures at the module Test Stand 2 in Lund, to support the execution and supervision of the SAT test program.
• Participation with the SRF Section to the shifts for the execution of the test program at the Test Stand 2 and possibly at the FREIA facility in Uppsala. The activity includes work in shift during unsocial hours.

Qualifications


• PhD in physics or engineering, with a thesis related to the physics and technology of radiofrequency accelerators. Experience with SRF accelerators represents an advantage.
• Basic experience and understanding of RF instrumentation (vector network analyzers, spectrum analyzers, power meters, oscilloscopes, etc.)
• Familiarity with python, git and open-source scientific programming in a multi-platform environment, for the development of high-level measurement/analysis applications.
• Some experience with development for electronics control and data acquisition systems.
• Familiarity and experience with control systems, and in particular the EPICS environment for the development of IOCs and OPIs, is an advantage.

Experience of working in an international environment is essential. Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite.

Duration & Location
The position is a fixed term position of 3 years. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden. The position is to be filled as soon as possible.
