We are looking for two Packaging Engineers, one located in Gothenburg (Sweden) and one located in Ismaning, Munich (Germany). For internal candidates, it can also be possible to be located in an office in one of our factory locations.
You will report to the Global Packaging Development Director.
The Packaging Engineer will be responsible for both the development and optimization of brand packaging solutions for primary, secondary and tertiary packaging components. The scope of the Packaging Engineer goes across all Essity business categories and geographies and includes interaction on a professional level with packaging suppliers and internal stakeholders from marketing, sales, product development, category management, sourcing, logistics and manufacturing, driving company goals and objectives.
In addition, as Packaging Engineer is a relatively new function within Essity R&D, we also expect you to strongly contribute to improving our processes and way-of-working, identifying knowledge gaps and filling them through enabling projects, developing new methods and tools, and defining new key performance indicators, in our journey of becoming a best-in-class R&D Packaging Development Team.
Main Tasks
Work in the innovation projects to ensure the development of optimum quality packaging with maximum speed to market and effective cost management in line with global brand packaging strategies
Support regional and global marketing teams on new product launches; specifically implementing new package designs, innovations and machine acceptance trials
Manage the development of global primary, secondary and tertiary packaging components and deliver specifications for both packaging innovations and re-design of packaging to support product changes and line extensions
Provide and communicate technical input and recommendations on all packaging-related matters and technical training and development to all appropriate areas
Set and improve the packaging specification parameter framework (QPack) for different materials and improve way-of-working for packaging development processes
Identify and develop innovative packaging concepts including materials, packaging format, print technology and brand assurance devices, with potential business benefits
Proactively develop, maintain and improve working relationships with manufacturing, product development, marketing, sales, category management, logistics and sourcing
Manage R&D Packaging Team enabling projects
Use a systematic approach to analyze data and suggests corrective actions to optimize current packaging solutions in terms of cost, functionality and process without affecting the value of the product
Perform root cause shipping and warehouse damage analysis and any relevant testing needed
Lead factory/business teams focused on packaging optimization, understanding the interaction among all the factors that influence the results; working on details with the big picture in mind
Key Competencies
Master's Degree required, preferably in Packaging Engineering, Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or other relevant field
A minimum of 3-5 years of industrial experience, working with various forms of packaging development
Experience from manufacturing environment and packaging machinery relative to line trials, the packaging process and packaging integrity/performance issues
Excellent English written and verbal communication skills
Experience with logistics optimization is preferred
Experience with SAP, Adobe Illustrator, Tops/Cape, AutoCad is an advantage
Project management experience is an advantage
Ability to travel up to 40% to domestic and international locations
Furthermore, we see that the Packaging Engineer has excellent communications skills, a holistic thinking that takes a broad stakeholder perspective and has the ability to understand stakeholder requirements, operational limitations and business opportunities. You have basic understanding of packaging materials, components and functionalities, the packaging filling process, and packaging associated test methods/standards.
