The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a lead engineer for the Personnel Safety System.

Description of directorate/division
The ESS, to be built in Lund, consists of a pulsed superconducting linear accelerator, delivering a proton beam with an average beam power of 5 MW, a rotating tungsten target and 22 neutron instruments, driving the world’s brightest neutron source. The Integrated Control System (ICS) division is responsible for the design, construction, commissioning and operation of control systems for the ESS facility including Accelerator, Target, Neutron Scattering Instruments and Conventional Facilities. The successful applicant will be responsible for designing, developing, testing, commissioning and operating the Personnel Safety System for the ESS facility within the ICS division.

Main responsibilities
You will be our expert on the Personnel Safety System (PSS) for the Integrated Control System (ICS) division having the responsibility for design, construction and operation of the ESS PSS. This responsibility includes besides others assuring safety for personnel from injury and exposure to critically high radiation levels. It is required to coordinate work with many scientists and engineers across ESS divisions to complete this task.

Your tasks will include the following actions:



• Gather, document and evaluate the safety system requirements from accelerator, target, neutron instruments and conventional facilities

• Communicate and validate the requirements to the development team

• Manage, coordinate and supervise the implementation efforts

• Perform quality assurance of deliverables

• Conduct site acceptance tests of the relevant sub-systems

• Assure compliance to legal issues related to systems for personnel safety

Qualifications
To be successful in this position you need excellent communication and organizational skills, especially when presenting information and deciding or initiating actions to be taken. Besides being able to apply your expertise and technology skills we also need you to be a strong team player.

You have a MSc (or higher degree) in Engineering or equivalent, and significant experience with and knowledge of the IEC61508 standard, system safety engineering and management, and good knowledge in system reliability/availability theory and techniques. You also possess excellent skills in machine physics and related personnel safety as well as design, construction, operation and performance optimization of safety and mission critical systems. Previous experience in managing a team of developers and contractors will be considered as an advantage. Experience of working in an international environment is essential and we expect you to be fluent in written and spoken English.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with six months initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.

Start date
The position is to be filled during Q1, 2014.
