The department of Product and Production Development performs research and education in the areas of styling, design engineering and production development - and in the interaction between these disciplines. The research aims to shorten the time from idea to finished product while achieving an added value for the customer. Automotive and engineering industries are among the major customers. A Ph.D. student position is available in the area of Human Factors/Ergonomics, more specifically Driver HMI. The position is placed at Division Design & Human Factors, Department for Product and Production Development at Chalmers University of Technology. The research project in which you will be involved concerns Future Layouts for Driver Positions and Visual Information in Trucks and is run in close cooperation with AB Volvo/Volvo Trucks.
Major responsibilities
Your major responsibilities as PhD student are to contribute to the results and dissemination of the project and to pursue your doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing, both in Swedish and in English.
Positions summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years. You will spend about 80% of this time on graduate studies (1/4 graduate courses and 3/4 thesis project work) and maximum 20% on undergraduate teaching and other departmental tasks. You will be inscribed into the postgraduate programme and the research school Human-Technology-Design.
Qualifications
You typically have master degree (or corresponding) in Ergonomics or Engineering with a profile in Ergonomics, Human Factors, or Human Factors Engineering. A mixed technical and human factors background is of particular value. A higher degree than bachelor is necessary in order to be meet the requirements. Furthermore is experience of research and/or development work in the domain an advantage, e.g. if you have worked with driver-vehicle interaction, simulator studies and/or computer manikins/models.
You should be open-minded and interested in pursuing results. It is important that you have the ability to work in teams, in particular cross-disciplinary teams, but you must also be able to work independently. You should have an ability and interest to communicate your practical as well as scientific results, both orally and written. You need to be fluent in English. However, due to the character of the research work, you should also be able to understand and speak Swedish.
