Arbetsbeskrivning
Team up with 10 fellow PhD students at Chalmers and Lund University to perform cutting-edge multi-disciplinary research in semiconductor system design! Your research on energy efficient and reconfigurable millimeter-wave compound semiconductor transmitter frontends will reduce CO2 impact and enable new applications ranging from wearable virtual-/extended reality (VR/XR) devices for telepresence to radars for security and environmental sensing.
Project description
Investigate a GaN transmitter frontend design that is designed to be adapted (bias, load impedance, etc.) dynamically with the RF signal envelope. The adaption signal is provided by an accompanying driver PA chip that is co-designed in CMOS and covered by separate PhD projects. This adaptation will allow for a transmitter frontend that simultaneously provides higher linearity and energy-efficiency compared to the state of the art, while maintaining a small form-factor which is essential for dense integration environments. You will work in close collaboration with others Ph.D. students to find the best signal split in terms of RF, bias, envelope, etc. for a globally optimum solution taking the characteristics of the different technologies (CMOS, GaN) into account.
Major responsibilities
Your major responsibilities as PhD student is to pursue your own doctoral studies, including both coursework and research. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing. In addition, the position will normally include 20% departmental work, mostly teaching duties. The employment is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications
To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in Electrical Engineering, Communication Engineering, Engineering Physics, Computer Engineering or similar, with a strong background in electronic circuit design. Experience in the design of integrated and high-frequency circuits is meritorious.
Since communication of research results is a central part of the work, communicative skills in English (oral as well as in writing) are vital. Furthermore, it will also be expected that you can take on responsibility, take own initiatives and work independently when needed. At the same time it is important that you are good at working in teams. This is especially vital since the current project will interact closely with adjacent disciplines. Finally, you need to be able to disseminate results and knowledge within existing and new networks. This includes academia, industry and society at large.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
