PhD in collaboration in major infrastructure construction projects

Arbetsbeskrivning

Are you interested in studying major and complex projects with multiple organisations collaborating? At the division of Service Management and Logistics we are looking for a PhD student to join our team.

Information about the division and the project
The Division of Service Management & Logistics is one of six divisions at the Department of Technology Management and Economics, which in research and teaching focuses on the interaction between technology development, industrial systems, society, people, and the environment. We offer you the chance to join a well-established research environment with a strong and appealing teaching portfolio. Our research focuses on the management, design, delivery, and improvement of processes and services from the perspective of the individual organization as well as the wider supply chain. We conduct problem-oriented, empirical, and inter-disciplinary research, with strong emphasis on industry and societal relevance, and attach value to high visibility in leading academic journals. The division has a particular research focus on organizations within sectors such as transportation, construction, healthcare, and manufacturing.

This Ph.D. student project is part of an externally funded research project on inter-organisational collaboration in complex infrastructure and/or civil engineering projects in the AEC (architecture, engineering and construction) industry. Public infrastructure clients in Sweden are working more towards collaborative delivery models for complex infrastructure and/or civil engineering projects. These new collaboration forms have impact on responsibilities, new roles, project management and project structure and on the development of new practices and the usage of digital technologies. For the project, the focus will be on studying collaboration between public clients, civil engineering consultants and contractors in relation to new ways of working, innovation, as well as digital practices and relevant competence for digital work in complex and major infrastructure and/or civil engineering projects. The PhD project will study a number of complex collaborative projects in Sweden to eventually suggest solutions for improving collaboration.

Your PhD studies will be supported by a team of supervisors with backgrounds in management, civil and structural engineering. The PhD project is connected to a network of industrial and public partners that support the research.

Major responsibilities
As a Ph.D. student, your major responsibility is to pursue your doctoral studies in relation to a specific research aim. At large, Ph.D. studies include following doctoral courses, literature reviews, designing research studies, collecting and analyzing empirical data, and communicating the results of your research verbally and in writing, both in Swedish and in English. The exact focus of the work will be decided in interaction with your supervisors.

You will spend approximately 80% of the time on research and be involved in teaching bachelor and master courses and/or perform other departmental tasks (20%). You will be enrolled into the postgraduate programme at the research school Technology Management and Economics.

Qualifications
To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree in e.g. industrial engineering and management, construction management, business administration, architecture, sociology or equivalent with an interest in organisational studies.

You have experience or an understanding from the Architecture, Engineering and Construction industry and have a keen interest in management and/or construction management questions. We believe you are highly motivated, capable of independent work, and able to engage in collaborative work together with people both in industry and academia. You also have a genuine interest in theory and in understanding complex problems. You have excellent analytical skills and communication skills in written and spoken English and due to the character of the research being able to understand and speak Swedish is preferable. You have the ability to work independently and take responsibility for progress and quality of the PhD-project. Large emphasis when selecting a candidate will be laid on your ability to write.

Contract terms
The position is a full-time temporary employment, limited to five years (1+2+2 years). The employment is bound to successful completion of department evaluations after one and three years.
