PhD in Computational Physics of Metasurface Emitting Lasers

PhD in Computational Physics of Metasurface Emitting Lasers

Arbetsbeskrivning

Chalmers University of Technology is launching the project "Metasurface-Emitting Lasers," a 5-year project funded by the Wallenberg Foundation. As part of this project, we are seeking a highly motivated candidate for a PhD project focused on metasurfaces and metasurface emitting lasers. You will study theoretical aspects of lasers containing nanophotonic structures such as metasurfaces and photonic crystal membranes and develop designs for such nanophotonic structures in close collaboration with experimental groups at Chalmers.

Information about the project
Phase-gradient metasurfaces are built from subwavelength particles whose properties are systematically varied over a surface. This allows one to control the phase of light that is transmitted through or reflected from the metasurface, which in turn makes it possible to construct extremely compact analogues of most common optical components, such as lenses, prisms, and polarizers. One particularly attractive option is to integrate metasurfaces with equally compact miniature laser sources (so-called VCSELs). This PhD project focuses on investigating and developing metasurfaces and metasurface emitting lasers using theoretical and computational tools. The design of these lasers will be in close collaboration with experimental groups in our photonics and bionanophotonics labs, e.g., for the development of large-area UV lasers and bioapplications.

This is one of several PhD projects within the Wallenberg project "Metasurface-emitting Lasers: Tomorrow's Light Sources":
PhD student position in Life-science Applications of Metasurface Emitting Lasers, ref 20210087
PhD student position in Optoelectronics - Lasers with Optical Metasurfaces, ref 20210106

You will be embedded in the condensed matter and materials theory division, a vibrant research group tackling questions ranging from nanomechanics to optics and quantum physics. Chalmers University of Technology is a leading research institution in nanoscience and hosts one of Europe's largest and most well equipped clean rooms dedicated to nanofabrication, as well as state-of-the-art high-performance computing equipment.

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility as a PhD student is to pursue your own doctoral studies. This includes developing scientific concepts and communicating research results both verbally and in writing. In addition to the research project, you will also take graduate courses within the graduate school of Physics. The majority of your working time will be devoted to your own research and competence development, but you may also be involved in teaching and other departmental duties.

A PhD position at Chalmers is a full-time, time-limited research position and an opportunity to qualify for further research positions within academia or industry. We offer a competitive salary, excellent working conditions, and access to world-class facilities and infrastructure.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications
The applicant should have, or expect to soon obtain, a M.Sc. degree in physics, electrical engineering, or an equivalent degree in a related subject area. Knowledge of condensed matter physics, electromagnetism, and/or optics is advantageous. The applicant should be interested in both condensed matter physics/optics and computational physics.

You will be expected to take initiative, work independently when needed, demonstrate creativity, and take responsibility for your work. You will also need to be able to disseminate results and knowledge within the scientific community and to a broader public. To that end, the applicant should have good command of both spoken and written English.

Chalmers continuously strives to be an attractive employer. Equality and diversity are substantial foundations in all activities at Chalmers.
