Arbetsbeskrivning
The Department has 76 faculty members and enrolls about 70 PhD students from more than 30 countries. The research spans the whole spectrum, from theoretical underpinnings to applied systems development. There is extensive national and international collaboration with academia and industry all around the world.
Information about the division
The Computer Engineering division at Chalmers University of Technology, Sweden, has a solid track record in contributing to design principles of high-performance and embedded computing systems. The CE research group is conducting research (related to this position) on Networks-on-chip (NoC) design for the next-generations of embedded and high-performance systems. The primary objective of this research is to deliver faster and more power-efficient NoC solutions.
Major responsibilities
Networks on chips (NoCs) have been a promising interconnect technology for multicores and systems-on-chip. That was a natural step due to the advances in semiconductor technology, which allow an increasing number of components/cores to be integrated on a chip. However technology scalling comes with significant power and performance limitations. The tight on-chip power budget requires better power efficiency at the interconnects. Moreover, as the number of on-chip components increases, the network latency is becoming too high, leading to performance degradation of the system.
To this end, we are recruiting one PhD student to work on the following topic: develop new NoC architectures (including router architectures, topology, routing, flow control, interfaces) that scale their latency and power-consumption better with the increasing number of on-chip components.
As a Ph.D. student, you are employed by Chalmers and will receive a salary according to current salary agreements. A maximum of 20% of your time will be devoted to other duties than your Ph.D. studies, mainly teaching. The remaining time will be devoted to your own courses and research within the research topic, and you are expected to obtain a Ph.D. within a maximum of 5 years.
Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
Qualifications
Applicants shall have a Master’s Degree or equivalent in Computer Engineering or in a related discipline. As for all PhD studies, a genuine interest and curiosity in the subject matter and excellent analytical and communication skills in speaking and in writing are required. Furthermore, since the research work normally involves developing simulation models of detailed system architectures and/or hardware designs, good programming skills as well as good hardware design skills are important. Successful candidates will have a profound interest in computer architectures and interconnection networks and a foundation in hardware design.
It is highly recommended that you include or e-mail letters of recommendation: we typically get a large number of applications, and it is simply not feasible for us to request individual letters. In addition, it is recommended to incode in the application any English language test certificates, e.g. TOEFL scores.
Application procedure
The application should be marked with Ref 20130289 and written in English. The application should be sent electronically and be attached as pdf-files, as below:
• Application: (Please name the appendix in the e-recruitment system as: APPLICATION, Surname, reference number)
- CV, include complete list of publications,
- Previous teaching and pedagogical experiences,
- Other, for example previous employments or leadership qualifications and positions of trust.
- Two references that we can contact.
• Personal letter/Qualifications 1-3 pages where you introduce yourself present your qualifications and describe your future research plans.
- Previous research fields and main research results.
- Future goals and research focus. Is there any specific projects and research issues you are primarily interested in?
• Other:
- Copies of bachelor or master’s thesis.
- Attested copies of completed education, grades and other certificates.
