We offer a PhD student position for exploring technologies in future low-noise amplifiers used in quantum computing.
Information about the research
In October 2019, Google published a paper in Nature where for the first time a quantum computer was shown to be faster than a classical supercomputer. While the quantum processor was engineered in superconducting electronics, much of the control and readout signals were filtered and amplified using semiconducting electronics. One of the components used in the Google breakthrough experiment is a low-noise amplifier which have been manufactured in the Chalmers cleanroom at MC2, being successfully commercialized by a spin-off company from Chalmers, Low Noise Factory AB.
In this PhD student project, we would like to push the frontiers for low-noise amplification targeting quantum computing.
The research for quantum bit amplification aims for highest signal-to-noise ratio of microwave photons at lowest power dissipation. This calls for a PhD student interested in research on advanced transistors based upon high-mobility materials as well as microwave circuit design needed for amplifying the extremely weak signals used in quantum computing (10-18 W). The PhD student must be prepared to dig into problems where the material properties, device physics and microwave design are all optimized for the constraints in qubit amplification.
We are fabricating devices in a state-of-the-art process at MC2 for ultra-low noise transistors. We offer very well-equipped measurement labs and co-supervision from specialists at Low Noise Factory AB. The Ph.D. student position offers possibilities to specialize in various areas, e.g. device physics, measurement and modelling, or microwave design. We have several projects with Low Noise Factory including international partners in South Korea.
Major responsibilities
Your major responsibilities are to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing, both in Swedish and in English. The position generally also includes teaching on Chalmers' undergraduate level or performing other duties corresponding to 20 per cent of working hours.
Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The Ph.D. position is nominally four years and includes three years of research projects and one year of classes. The research leads to an academic thesis to be defended at a public dissertation. In addition, teaching for undergraduates can be added to the position which accordingly will prolong the Ph.D. program.
Qualifications
A suitable background is Master of Science in Physics (F) with classes in (microwave) electronics alternatively Electrical Engineering (E) with classes in physics/microwave engineering. It is essential to have a strong inner driving force for pushing a project as well as excellent collaboration skills in a research team. This research is carried out in GigaHertz Centre (www.chalmers.se/ghz), a joint collaboration between Chalmers and the best microwave companies in the world.
