Arbetsbeskrivning

Information about the department, division and the project
The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg has about 200 employees and is the largest department of mathematics in Sweden.

The department has three scientific divisions, Algebra and Geometry, Analysis and Probability Theory, and Applied Mathematics and Statistics and conducts successful research in pure and applied mathematics and mathematical statistics in a wide range of research areas.

We have an international environment with frequent exchanges with other universities around the world. The department provides a friendly, creative, and supportive atmosphere with a steady flow of international guests. There are many committed teachers with extensive and broad experience of all aspects of higher education. More information about us can be found on our website.

At the division for Applied Mathematics and Statistics we conduct research within biostatistics, spatial modeling, Bayesian inference, high-dimensional data, large-scale computational methods, the theory and implementation of finite element methods, inverse wave propagation problems, stochastic (partial) differential equations, geometric integration, optimization, and bioinformatics. The division is also expanding in the area of AI – Artificial Intelligence. More details about our activities within AI are available at AI@MS.

We are now recruiting one doctoral student in mathematical statistics for artificial intelligence for a project financed by the Chalmers AI Research Centre.

The expansion of Artificial Intelligence (AI), in the broad sense, is one of the most exciting developments of the 21st century. This progress opens up many possibilities but also poses grand challenges. Chalmers has recently launched the Chalmers AI Research Centre (CHAIR) to significantly increase Chalmers’ expertise and excellence in artificial intelligence.

We are able to announce one PhD position for the research project:
"Simulation-based Bayesian inference and deep learning for stochastic modelling"
Supervisor: Umberto Picchini.

Major responsibilities
You will be enrolled in a graduate program at the Department of Mathematical Sciences and you will be part of the AI@MV research environment. As a student of a CHAIR project you will enjoy specific activities such as CHAIR seminars and summer schools/courses dedicated to CHAIR PhD students. As a PhD student in Mathematical Sciences you have opportunities for many inspiring conversations, a lot of autonomous work and some travel. You are expected to develop your own ideas and communicate scientific results orally as well as in written form. In addition, all positions will normally include 20% departmental work, mostly teaching duties.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications
Applicants must have a strong background in data-science and mathematical statistics. They must have obtained a master's degree or a 4-year bachelor's degree, or expect to complete such a degree by October 1, 2020.

Experience in some of the following areas (in alphabetical order) may be meritorious: Bayesian inference, machine learning and neuronal networks, Monte Carlo statistical methods, stochastic differential equations.

You should include all relevant work such as bachelor's or master's thesis and articles (provide an English summary if necessary) that you have authored or co-authored. Evidence of mathematical problem solving skills is significant, besides course grades.

As Chalmers is a highly international environment, proficiency in written and spoken English is necessary.
Chalmers offers Swedish courses.

Our offer to you
Chalmers offers a cultivating and inspiring working environment in the dynamic city of Gothenburg.
