Arbetsbeskrivning
The high-temperature processes group is looking for PhD students or postdocs to be part of our work on development of novel gas cleaning methods to achieve new low-emissions standards in industrial and heat and power generation sectors. We are looking for equal amounts of talent, ambition and social competence.
Information about the project and the research
Emissions from industrial sources, shipping, but also in heat and power generation applications to the atmosphere continues to cause major issues with air quality, acidification and global warming. The ongoing transformation of industrial energy systems to reduce CO2 emission by the use of biomass, electrification, hydrogen or CCS all require novel cost-effective gas cleaning solutions to cover the new needs for emission control. The increased scope of industrial sectors that are included in EU legislation - and elsewhere globally - will require demonstration of new best available technology with respect to NOx, SOx and particulate emissions. In parallel, novel concepts of CO2 capture need to be employed via absorption and adsorption-based processes. Some of these new concepts are based on pollutant removal via the flue gas condensate in multi-pollutant emission control strategies, which is also the basis of the work of this position.
This project takes departure in a long-term experience in gas cleaning processes at the Division of Energy Technology. In this work, technical solutions are sought to include new industrial sectors with improved emission control strategies. The project will focus on the use of oxidation chemicals in a novel gas cleaning system that allows for multipollutant removal of harmful emissions. The project will be based on an on-going collaboration with an industrial partner and demonstration in commercial scale is a vital part of the project. The work combines experimental and modelling work and will be carried out in a dedicated team.
In the position you will be part of a team that develops our high-temperature research at Chalmers. This includes the design of new measurement devices installation of new gas cleaning equipment and execution of experiments. You will work with researchers with internationally recognized experience in the field of research on different energy conversion and gas cleaning technologies. As an employee at the Division of Energy Technology you will be part of a research community with the general aim to reduce the environmental impact of energy conversion and industrial processes. All work will be conducted in close collaboration with our industrial partners.
Major responsibilities
Your major responsibilities as a PhD student are to take responsibility of your part of the described project, to publish high-quality research in scientific journals and at conferences. In addition, you will participate in the teaching at the Division of Energy Technology, with courses focusing on technical and system-oriented energy science. You are also expected to actively participate in our research teams’ effort in developing new experimental methods and modelling tools.
As a postdoc, you are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research verbally and in writing.
Qualifications
To qualify for the PhD position, you must have a MSc level degree in a relevant field, e.g. Mechanical engineering, Chemical engineering or equivalent. Familiarity with algebraic modeling languages used in Matlab.
To qualify for the postdoc position you must have a Ph.D. in a relevant field by the start date of the position, the degree should generally not be older than three years. Experience of direct relevance for the project is required.
For both positions excellent writing and communication skills in English are required.
Contract terms
Either a PhD student or postdoc position will be formed, depending on the candidate selected. The PhD position is limited to a maximum of five and the postdoc is limited to two years. In both cases, the position is on a full-time, temporary employment basis.
