PhD position at Chalmers Architecture within Marie Curie Programme TRADERS

Arbetsbeskrivning

TRADERS is practice-driven research training focusing design and architecture, participation and public space. It is conducted in collaboration between Faculty of the Arts at LUCA/KH Limburg, Division of Architecture at the Royal College of Art in London, Design Academy Eindhoven, HDK School of Design at Gothenburg University and the Department of Architecture at Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg. Within this programme we announce a doctoral position at Chalmers Architecture. The call is more fully described in Appendix 1, FP7, Marie Curie/Multi-ITN – Call for ESRs TRADERS

The position also connects to the strong research environment Architecture in the Making, hosted by Chalmers, and will specifically be oriented towards Investigative Modeling and Material Making as described below.

Information about Chalmers Architecture
Chalmers Architecture has a strong sustainability profile and works on crucial social issues with an openly exploratory and practice-based approach within four areas: Building Design, Space and Process, Urban Design and Planning, Architectural Conservation and Transformation. The Department has roughly 60 employees. We are situated on campus Johanneberg.

Our academic environment is open and collaborative, with interdisciplinary exchange with national and international academic partners, with stakeholders in society and industry, and the transdisciplinary centre Mistra Urban Futures. From 2011 Chalmers Architecture is part of a unique joint venture between the Swedish Schools of Architecture, with two strong national research programs (Architecture in the Making; Architecture in Effect), and the National Research School in Architecture, see www.arkitekturakademin.se.

Job description
Challenges:

Transforming urban space is a collective process where the architect’s spatial thinking and design methods are needed as creative tools for invention, intervention and leadership.

The aim is to develop independent researchers with close connection to practice for a continued career in academia, industry or other parts of society. As a doctoral student you will participate in the TRADERS activities and, if relevant to the ResArc national doctoral school.

Within the TRADERS collaboration, Chalmers Architecture is responsible for the theme ‘Modeling in Dialogue’. Modeling shall here be understood in a broad sense, from digital modeling and hands on material representation to full scale intervention in urban space. The Dialogue is also open: from onsite participatory exercises to exploring dialogue forms in modeling activities. In all, this encourages a research by design approach.

The old harbour area, Frihamnen, in the central area of Gothenburg will provide a challenging space for TRADERS in Gothenburg, with long term transformation where art and intervention can stage alternative futures and approaches.

The doctoral position is limited to maximum 3 years of full-time research studies with a possible extension to 4 years for a full doctoral degree at Chalmers. If agreed, this may even be extended to 5 years including one year of teaching in the undergraduate programs at Chalmers Architecture. The work will include courses, seminars, individual work and conference paper presentations according to Chalmers rules of procedures. Salary, including full social security, is set according to Chalmers rules for doctoral positions, starting with approximately 25000 SEK/month.

Partly fulfilled doctoral studies or alternative co-sponsoring of the positions is of interest.

According to the EU regulations, the candidate must not have resided or carried out her/his main activity (work, studies etc) in Sweden or at Chalmers Architecture for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the recruitment.

Qualifications
We welcome applicants who are qualified for doctoral studies preferably with a degree in architecture, design or art related to urban studies. Applicants with practical experience of architecture and/or design are encouraged to apply. You are expected to work independently, with supervision, to develop your own ideas, and to be skilled in communicating your research results within academy as well as in practice. You will work in an architectural environment with transdisciplinary networks and is expected to be open for collaboration across disciplinary borders.
