A PhD position is now announced within the research project “Consensus in energy renovation”. The project is carried out in collaboration with local industry partners. The overall aim of the research project is to increase the understanding of how a renovation project affect tenants’ in rental housing. The goal for the project is to contribute with knowledge that can be used to find ways forward that bridge ambitions for energy efficiency and people’s basic needs for safety and a good home. Questions that will be dealt with are: How do tenants experience a renovation project? What role does a renovation play in tenants’ decisions to stay or relocate? What are the tenants’ views on energy renovation?

We are looking for a PhD student with an interest in social perspectives on the built environment. You should be skilled and have interest in academic writing and both qualitative and quantitative methods.

The research project will enroll within the division of Building design at the Department of Architecture and Civil Engineering. The division teaches and carries out research about design and planning for design with a special focus on design for health care and housing design. The division is the host for two centers, the Center for Health Care Architecture (CVA) and the Center for Housing Architecture (CBA).

Main responsibilities
As a PhD student your major responsibility is to pursue your own doctoral studies related to the project. This includes carrying out empirical studies, applying  theoretical perspectives, and communicating research results both verbally and in writing.  Your research activities will contribute to enhanced knowledge in the scientific field, in particular by presenting your results in scientific journals and at international conferences. You are also expected to communicate your results to actors in the industry, the public sector and to the general public. You will belong to a research project which is co-financed by industry partners and you are expected to participate in meetings with these industry partners.

This is a four year position which do not include any compolsary teaching activities. However, in order to develop as an academic you will be invited to take part in education, which might prolong the time of the position.

Contract terms
The position as a PhD student at Chalmers University of Technology is a full-time temporary employment, with a competitive monthly salary and full social benefits. There are no tuition fees for PhD studies at Chalmers. This position is limited to a maximum of five years.

Your profile
To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits. We expect you to have a master degree in social sciences, architecture or civil engineering.

Fluency in Swedish (speaking and writing) is mandatory for this position as it is needed for the empirical studies that will enroll in the research project and reporting to project partners. Knowledge in advanced quantitative methodology (master level) is also required for the research that is undertaken. Fluency in English is expected as the research will be communicated in international scientific journals and conferences.
