PhD position in Andreev quantum bits: When spins go superconducting

PhD position in Andreev quantum bits: When spins go superconducting

Arbetsbeskrivning

Information about the research group and the project
The focal point of this project is a novel superconducting quantum hardware: the Andreev level quantum bit, which enables the storage of quantum information in a localized wavefunction in a superconducting weak link. This paradigm allows for the strong coupling of a single electron spin to a superconducting quantum circuit, combining the advantages of spin qubits and superconducting qubits.

The group of Attila Geresdi, where the project is embedded in, works on hybrid quantum electronics. We harness the combination of semiconductors and superconductors to build and measure novel device architectures, and to develop new technologies for quantum information processing. Major responsibilities
As a PhD student, the focus of your work will be the nanofabrication and circuit QED measurements of low-dimensional hybrid nanodevices hosting Andreev qubits. The nanofabrication is performed in house, at the Nanofabrication Laboratory. The experiments are carried out in dry dilution refrigerators equipped with microwave and DC wiring achieving a base temperature of around 10 mK. During the project, you will develop your scientific understanding, experimental skills and means to communicate your own results, both verbally and in writing. You will also interact and exchange ideas with external academic collaborators, and will present your results on international conferences. The working langauge of the group is English.

In addition to your research work, you will take advanced, graduate level courses which will facilitate your personal and scientific development.
The position may also include teaching as well as supervision of msc and bsc students. Teaching and other departmental work correspond to at most 20% effort.

Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years, with four years dedicated to research full time.

Qualifications
To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in a relevant scientific discipline. You must have sound language skills in English. In addition, you should have:
• a good understanding of solid state physics, quantum transport in mesoscopic systems and superconductivity;
• the motivation to be an experimental researcher.

It is good to have the following experiences:
• Programming in Python, especially for instrumentation control (e.g. QCoDes);
• Nanofabrication in a clean room environment;
• Cryogenic and microwave domain experiments.
