The position will be based at Division of Extractive Metallurgy, Luleå University of Technology, Sweden (www.ltu.se) but the candidate will spend part of the study time at Department of Molecular Biology, Umeå University, Sweden (www.umu.se/).Luleå and Umeå are the major universities in the otherwise sparsely populated northern Sweden.


Iron and sulfur oxidizing acidophiles (optimum growth pH <5) are utilized for the sustainable recovery of metals from sulfide ores in the process termed 'biomining'.The study will involve the use of acidophilic microorganisms to investigate the removal of copper from minerals and is strongly coupled to industrial processes.The project is interdisciplinary between both chemistry and biotechnology.
Candidates should have an interest in technical chemistry or biology with coupling to industry.In particular, knowledge and experience in the following subjects are desired: inorganic and physical chemistry, metallurgy, microbiology and biotechnology.Candidates with a postgraduate degree will be considered at an advantage.
