The Chemistry Department at Umeå University today[has approximately[170 members and[offers a stimulating environment with a commitment to excellence in both teaching and research and provides a valuable service to society. The Department of Chemistry now announces .Ph.D.position in Chemometrics on mass spectroscopy based metabolomics This Ph.D.project will develop strategies for monitoring and diagnosis of mass spectroscopy based metabolomics on plant and mammalian samples. This includes statistical experimental design for planning of studies as well as multivariate statistical methods for data processing, modeling and visualization. Metabolomics gives an unbiased view of changes in metabolism during environmental, genetic or developmental changes. Here, Chemometrics represents a key technology for the analysis of these complex multiparametric data describing biological systems and also provides a means of collecting relevant information through statistical experimental design.Strong inter-disciplinary networks will be fundamental to the success of this research. Our close collaboration with Umeå Plant Science Centre (UPSC), Umeå University creates a unique environment in Sweden for world leading research within the area of plant functional genomics and systems biology. The added value lies in the combination of UPSC's state of the art infrastructure, academic excellence, and the chemometric competence in the analysis and evaluation of the large masses of data generated. The Ph.D.student needs to be skilled in both oral and written communication in English, be able to work independently as well as in collaboration with others.Practical experience in metabolomics, statistical experimental design, multivariate calibration and computer programming is a merit. To qualify for this position, the student must have received a minimum of 90 ECTS in chemistry and 180 ECTS overall or equivalent competence. The application should contain a CV, including academic grades, a copy of degree project report and any publications, two personal references along with a personal letter of one A4 sheet describing yourself and why you apply for this position.
