About Us
Our research unit, Connected Intelligence, is located in the RISE offices in Kista and is a part of the RISE Computer Science department. We engage in research projects with high academic quality at both international and national level. Some of our projects are also in close collaboration with industry. The Connected Intelligence unit focuses on networked and connected systems from IoT to smart networks - 5G and beyond.
Project Description
Body computing seeks to advance sciences related to the study of human bodies with the use of information technologies. Wearable technology such as smartwatches and fitness trackers, implanted devices such as muscle stimulators, and brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) can detect, analyze, and transmit information concerning body signals, such as vital signs or ambient data, and allow immediate biofeedback to the person. For example, BMIs and muscle stimulators can be used to stimulate limbs that lost contact with the brain, providing tactical sensing for feedback of touch. Body area networks (BANs) allow to exchange information depending on application requirements. The diversity of device architectures, available resources, and programming systems makes it challenging to develop body computing applications. Therefore, this PhD project aims to improve software design and implementation for body computing applications. The PhD student will conceive programming systems that hide the distributed nature of the computing platforms at stake. She/he will design and implement the necessary system-level techniques enabling an efficient execution of applications regardless of environment conditions.
Requirements
The candidate should have (at the time of the start of the project) a Master of Science degree in computer science or related areas relevant to the PhD project topic. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with programming languages, low-level software, and low-power embedded systems. Evidence of good communication skills, good command of both spoken and written English, are required.
Are we right for each other?
At RISE we like difference and we are convinced that diversity contributes to an innovative environment where we together challenge boundaries and develop new knowledge and competence for the future. With us, passionate problem solvers meet to solve some of the world's most important, and perhaps most interesting, problems. We can't promise you a simple job, but what we can promise you is a bunch of dedicated colleagues and some really exciting societal challenges to deal with. You will work in a dynamic environment that gives you development opportunities both professionally and personally. With us, you will have the opportunity to make a real difference.
