PhD position in forestry effects on ecosystem functions

Arbetsbeskrivning

At the Department of Ecology, Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences in Uppsala, we conduct internationally outstanding empirical and theoretical research and education for sustainable forest and agricultural production and effective nature conservation. Our research on populations, communities and ecosystems forms a basis for studying the effects of changes in land use and climate on animals, plants and soil. The department's postgraduate education aims to develop your creative and analytical thinking and develop your communication and ability to collaborate.

We are now looking for a doctoral student to investigate how the biological functions of the soil differ between northern coniferous forests that have never been clear-cut and those that have undergone a clear-cutting phase. The doctoral student will carry out detailed measurements of carbon flows and nutrient dynamics with a focus on the long-term effects of on forest growth and carbon storage. The work includes, among other things, field measurements of the soil's carbon and nutrient flows, dendrochronological studies, and some modeling. The doctoral project is part of a larger FORMAS-funded interdisciplinary project addressing the role of the Swedish forest in mitigating climate change. The project includes researchers from several departments at SLU and Uppsala University.
