We closely collaborate with multiple stakeholders and conduct applied research in forest ecology, silviculture, pathology, policy and planning. We teach bachelor, master’s and PhD level courses addressing all of these subject areas. 

Silviculture with focus on Scots pine and thinning 
Description:
The aim of the PhD student position is a doctoral degree. In this project the student will primarily do research in silviculture of Scots pine in boreal forestry. The project will focus on growth and yield, and specifically the tree and stand response to thinnings. The main core of research work will be to analyze data from long term experiments and dealing with ecophysiological concepts of tree growth. The project is part of a larger interdisciplinary collaboration project between SLU and Stora Enso which will comprise about 5 doctoral students and several researchers who will have joint activities. They will also gain good insight into the work of an international company working with the entire value chain from forest production to finished bio-based product. The postgraduate education will be coordinated with trainee activities within Stora Enso. 

Qualifications:
The applicant should have a M. Sc. degree in silviculture or related forest sciences, biostatistics or a related discipline but with main focus on understanding tree and stand growth and development. Other beneficial qualifications are experience of forestry analytics, using preferably R programming language and/or GIS software, and good communications skills with fluency in written English. Drivers’ license is a necessity for the work duties.

A person has basic eligibility for third cycle education if he or she has taken a second cycle qualification or has completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at second cycle education. Upper secondary school grades equivalent to English B/English 6 are a basic requirement.

Selection among applicants meeting the requirements is made with reference to written application including curriculum vitae, copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records, one copy of the dissertation for masters or undergraduate degree, a list of at least two references familiar with the applicant's qualifications, certified knowledge of the English language and an interview.
