The Division of Science, Technology and Society (STS) at Chalmers University of Technology, will hire a PhD student in Social Studies of Science and Technology, with a specialisation in Gender and Medical Technologies. You do not need to have an engineering background to apply; applicants from the social sciences are encouraged. Applicants are given the opportunity to design their own research plan within the specialisation of gender and medical technologies. Example of areas might be gender, biomedical technologies and the body; gendered dimensions of medical treatments and medical engineering; the consequenses of introducing and/or using gender-specific medical technologies in healthcare. An orientation towards ethnograhic research methods is encouraged.
Information about the division and the project
The Division of Science, Technology and Society (STS) is a young and vibrant division at the Department Technology Management and Economics at Chalmers University of Technology. We have an open and friendly research environment, where you can delve deep into research questions particular to your own field as well as easily find top researchers from other fields who have long experience in interdisciplinary research, and are eager to bring in new perspectives to their own work. There are also strong collaborations with other universities and divisions, such as within gender studies and science and technology studies.
This PhD position will be in Social Studies of Science and Technology, with a specialisation in Gender and Medical Technologies. Relevent research fields may be science and technology studies, gender studies, sociology, anthropology or media studies. Relevant theoretical perspectives might be, for example, feminist technoscience studies, intersectionality and posthumanism.
The STS division's research and education covers a wide area including Science and Technology Studies (STS), Gender and Technology and History of Science and Technology.
Major responsibilities
Your major responsibilities are to pursue your own doctoral studies, 80% of full time. The position also includes departmental work, 20% of full time, such as teaching in gender and technology and similar subjects as well as doing administrative tasks.
Qualifications
To qualify as PhD student, you must have completed a Master's degree (MA or MSc), corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits when starting the position. You may come from the social sciences, humanities, or engineering. Relevant educational degrees and/our specialisations might be Science and Technology Studies, Gender Studies, Anthropology, Sociology or Media Studies. Mandatory qualifications for applicants with a MSc (Science or Engineering) degree are a Master's thesis on a social scientifically themed topic and experience in working with qualitative methods. Prior study experience of social aspects of gender and medical technologies is meritorious.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English. If Swedish is not your native language, Chalmers offers Swedish courses.
Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of 5 years.
