PhD position in the subject of Medical Science with an orientation towards: Epidemiology and Public Health Sciences at the Department of Public Health and Clinical Medicine Description of the PhD project As a PhD-student you will join the division for Epidemiology and Public Health Sciences, also hosting Umeå Centre for Global Health Research.Your project within the field of coeliac disease (gluten intolerance) will be carried out in collaboration with scholars in the multidisciplinary research programme, 'Microdata research on childhood for lifelong health and welfare' (the Umeå SIMSAM Node), funded by the Swedish Research Council (VR).Coeliac disease, also called gluten sensitive enteropathy, has emerged as a public health problem affecting 3% of Swedish children.We host the Childhood Coeliac Disease Register, the only of its kind worldwide.This used with other national registers, will give a unique opportunity to learn more about causes and consequences of the disease.Knowledge gained may also have implications for other autoimmune disease, such as insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.Qualifications You need to have finalised a university education relevant to the field of epidemiology and public health sciences.Knowledge in speaking and writing Swedish and English is mandatory.It is important that you are interested in working in an academic environment characterised by global and multidisciplinary collaboration.Salary/type of position The post is a four-year fulltime PhD-position ("doktorandtjänst"), with salary successively increasing according to a stipulated scale.A requirement for this post is that you have been accepted as a PhD student, and before that you have to develop a quite comprehensive research plan with support from your supervisors.During this period you will be offered a position as project assistant.Application The application should include an introductory letter and a short description (maximum 2 pages) of how you foresee proceeding with the project.Also include your CV, contact information for at least two references, a certified copy of grades and degree certificates, a copy of undergraduate and graduate theses, and any other document that you wish to refer to.The procedure for recruitment for the position is in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance (chapt.12, 2 ) and the decision regarding the position cannot be appealed.The applications will be discarded or, if the applicant wishes, returned two years after the position has been filled.Decision about the position can be expected during September 2009.
