Arbetsbeskrivning
The position is an opportunity to conduct cutting-edge research using remote sensing measurements and modelling within Earth science. A selection of different Earth Science problems can be chosen with different weight on measurements, fieldwork, data analysis and modelling.
Information about the division and the projects
The division of Microwave and Optical Remote Sensing is involved in research based on remote sensing data acquired by ground-based, aircraft and satellite instruments. The goal is to perform environmental-related research using microwave and optical remote sensing. The research is conducted by combining measurement data and mathematical models for information retrieval and estimation of relevant variables. The research area is international and spans a variety of disciplines and applications.
The field of research in these projects include atmospheric remote sensing and data science. We offer a choice of five different projects which all relate to different scientific problems within Earth science that we work with at the division and which all are based on a mix of measurements, data analysis and modelling. The projects are (see detailed descriptions in the links):
1) Air Quality and Climate interactions in Low- and Middle-Income Countries - combine observations at different spatial and temporal resolutions with regional meteorological and chemical transport models to improve understanding of sources, transport, and impact of air pollutants in air quality and climate, with a focus on low-and middle-income countries.
More information here.
2) Electromagnetic scattering computations in remote sensing - develop and use numerical methods for solving electromagnetic scattering problems which have a large size parameter.
More information here.
3) Investigating Arctic amplification - combine observations on sea ice, atmospheric observations and modelling/analysis of climate modell or reanalysis output.
More information here.
4) Machine learning in remote sensing - explore several ML techniques and apply to different Earth observation problems.
More information here.
5) Measurements and modelling of aerosol and cloud processes at different scales - improve observation methods, measurement retrieval and model representation of microphysical properties and processes occurring on atmospheric aerosols and clouds.
More information here.
Major responsibilities
The work will depend on the chosen project but will include a varying degree of instrument development, measurements (field campaigns), model development, usage of models and data analysis. Actively taking part in national and international collaboration (project, meetings, study visits and conferences). The position also includes mandatory and elective courses.
Qualifications
To qualify as a PhD student, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits in natural science, computational science or engineering. For some of the projects additional qualifications are needed. It is required that the degree has been obtained before the employment starts.
You should be willing to learn by reading textbooks and scientific articles. You are expected to actively explore new research directions and be willing to take initiative in their work.
Position summary
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.
