Arbetsbeskrivning

Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment
The Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment (www.slu.se/vatten-miljo) works with applied environmental research. Having the national responsibility for environmental monitoring and assessment of lakes and watercourses is a key factor in both the quality and societal impact of our research, which encompasses aquatic ecology and biodiversity, geochemistry and hydrology as well as aquatic ecotoxicology and environmental chemistry. Half of the Department’s hundred staff members are researchers and PhD students, while the half provided qualified technical support. The department is part of the Soil – Water- Environmental Center situated on the SLU campus in Ultuna, Uppsala.

Forest management practices and their effect on surface water chemistry
Description:
The overall aim of the project is to investigate the effects of different forest management practices on the water chemistry of connecting surface waters. Focus will be on the effects of forest ditch cleaning and wetland restoration on carbon (dissolved organic carbon, carbon dioxide, methane) in runoff. The project will largely be conducted within the newly established forest experimental area, Trollberget, Västenbotten. The Trollberget area is established in collaboration with the forest company Holmen, the County administration, the Forest agency and SLU, Umeå. The project will contain a large portion of field-based collection of data where innovative isotope-based methods together with water chemical measurements will be used in order to understand how surface waters are affected by different forest management practices.

Qualifications:
We seek a highly motivated candidate with a master exam in environmental science, hydrology, biology, physical geography, or comparable. The candidate should have a genuine research interest, high ability to communicate, high work ethic, be a team player and be able to collaborate within a research environment. Good knowledge about biogeochemistry and hydrology is a requirement. Experience or knowledge about wetlands and the biogeochemistry of carbon is seen as a merit. GIS experience is also seen as a merit. The candidate must have a good ability to communicate in spoken and written English.
