PhD student-flow control of fibre orientation

Wallenberg Wood Science Center is seeking a PhD student to study flow control of fibre orientation in wood-fibre biocomposites with placement at KTH, Stockholm, Sweden Wallenberg Wood Science Center is a joint research center established with KTH, Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden and Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden, as participants.The annual budget exceeds 40 MSEK and at least 50 people will participate.The objective is underpinning materials research for utilization of our forests in new products, such as "green" polymers and biocomposite materials.The tree is viewed as a source of chemicals, monomers, biopolymers and fibers.Recent advances in nanotechnology, polymer science, biotechnology and mechanics are being combined with established forest products technologies in a new multidisciplinary research center located in Stockholm and in Gothenburg.Research project The new Wallenberg Center is seeking a PhD student to join the group of Fluid Mechanics.The objective is to contribute to the development of suspension based processing techniques allowing continuous processing of fibre network/webs with controlled fiber orientation distributions.This will allow manufacturing of wood-fibre composites with the highest material mechanical performance in a prescribed direction.The work includes investigating how the flow-field modifications can be implemented in order to actively control fibre orientation.You will also work with experimental oriented tasks. The experimental work is related to the flow in nozzles used to produce continuous fibre networks/webs.You will be offered an independent role but in order to succeed in your research cooperative skills are essential. Qualifications MSc degree in applied physics, mathematics, mechanical engineering or a related field, a specialization in fluid mechanics, experimental methods in mechanics or computational science is an advantage.Fluency in English, both written and verbal, is a must.
