PhD Student i physics

Arbetsbeskrivning

The research at the division of Solid State Physics is focused on different aspects of semiconductor physics, ranging from materials science via quantum physics to different applications. The division is at the center of the major interdisciplinary research environment within nanoscience and nanotechnology at Lund University - the Nanometer Structure Consortium at Lund University (nmC@LU). Lund Nano Lab is a central key facility for fabrication of material and devices on the nanoscale. The division is also heavily involved in the undergraduate education, especially within the "Engineering Nanoscience" program.

During 2014 - 2018, the Nanometer Structure Consortium will host the EU project "Nanoscale Materials for Energy: Fundamentals, Safety and Applications (PhD4Energy)", a FP7 Marie Curie Innovative Doctoral Program that will train in total 12 early-stage researchers (PhD students). The scientific focus is the material science, growth and application of semiconductor nanowires for photovoltaics, light-emitting diodes and thermoelectrics, safety investigations of nanoparticles, and energy conversion at the molecular scale. The project requires advanced materials science, nanocharacterization, interdisciplinary methods, and close collaboration between theory and experiment. All PhD students within PhD4Energy will perform an internship at a Swedish or international company or at a major research facility as part of their training.

Job assignments

The PhD student will work experimentally on a fundamental science project focused on optical spectroscopy of semiconductor nanowires which may have applications in energy-relevant devices. The project will involve different optical spectroscopies including low-temperature photoluminescence and Raman scattering. A wide variety of nanowire materials will be studied, including strained heterostructured nanowires. Most of the time the investigations will be on single nanowires. A tight collaboration with crystal growth experts is expected to develop. The aim of the research is to understand the electronic properties of the nanowires such light absorption, the effect of quantum confinement and charge separation and the possibility to tune these effects using, for instance, built-in strain.

The PhD studies contain a course part and a scientific project. The PhD student will be expected to carry out several months of internship in a company or major research facility. Active participation in outreach activities and teaching at the undergraduate level might also be a part of the job.
