The doctoral position is unique and will lead to a much sought-after competence and will give you as a researcher the opportunity to work in a creative research environment both at Luleå University of Technology and in the organizations and companies with which we cooperate.
The Architecture research subject is one of our 19 research subjects at the Department of Civil Engineering and Natural Resources. The research group includes about 20 people with competence ranging from urban and traffic planning to architecture and urban design, conservation, and landscape architecture. Our research and education make a crucial contribution to shaping policies and planning for future cities. The Department has about 400 people with about 50 nationalities, of which 180 doctoral students and just over 50 professors. Our research and education have a strong experimental and applied profile with several large and well-equipped laboratories.
Project description
As a doctoral student, you will be working in the field of architecture, urban and traffic planning and your work will be linked with national and international R&D projects. Research topics aims to develop new architecture and planning knowledge as well as methods to deal with the ongoing climate transition in cities. The projects will focus on the following areas:
• Computational and climate-sensitive architecture and urban design
• Role of generative AI for a shared aesthetic of the green transition
• Create, design, and maintain healthy urban design for walking
• Reactivating architectural heritage in northern peripheral regions
• Transdisciplinary knowledge making for attractive urban futures
Duties
The work will be carried out in the Architecture group of Luleå University of technology in Luleå. The research field is multi-disciplinary and of both a scientific and an applied nature including fields such as architecture, urban planning, and transport. The PhD student will work with quantitative and qualitative methods (e.g., field measurements, survey, numerical modelling, participatory design, living labs, business models, etc.). All the scientific work will be presented in English in articles in scientific journals.

Qualifications
The basic requirement for education at the research level is that one has been awarded a degree at an advanced level, completed courses giving at least 240 university credits, of which at least 60 university credits are at an advanced level, or in some other way either in this country or abroad acquired the corresponding knowledge. We are looking for a talented and motivated colleague who can both alone and in cooperation with others carry out advanced research in our research group. You should be a good team-player with a good knowledge of both oral and written English, and you should preferably have a background in architecture, planning, arts/culture innovation or similar.
Knowledge of, and willingness to further learn, the following are an advantage:
• advanced digital software for building and urban simulation (e.g., Unity, Rhinoceros-grasshopper and related plugins for generative design and energy simulation, Autodesk Revit, ENVI-Met/CFD, Autodesk Dynamo, ArcGIS or similar, etc.)
• Coding for app design in Python, C#, C++, R, Java
• Artistic and transdisciplinary methods for knowledge making.
• Participatory design methods and living labs.
• Swedish language.
We appreciate candidates who have previous experience in practice and/or scientific publication.
You are expected to carry out your doctoral studies full-time in connection with the project described. Luleå University of Technology undertakes to provide active support from a qualified supervisory group and a proposal for a doctoral education that will lead to a doctor’s degree in Architecture. An active participation in the further development of the international research society will be encouraged.
Further information
Fulltime fixed-termed employment for four year (up to maximum five years) regulated by the Swedish Higher Education ordinance. Ddepartmental duties (e.g. teaching) up to 20 % of fulltime can also occur. The appointment is planned to start on Fall 2023. Location: Luleå.
