Arbetsbeskrivning
Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences Department of Ecology in Ultuna 1 PhD student in the research education subject: Biology Forest insects and climate change: trophic interactions along climatic gradients. The project aims at investigating to what extent variation in trophic interactions along climatic (e.g.latitudinal) gradients affect the risk for outbreaks in a forest insect, the European pine sawfly (Neodiprion sertifer). It is anticipated that forest insect problems will increase as a consequence of the ongoing climate change. However, there are few studies of how the processes behind fluctuations in density vary with climatic conditions. In this project data from empirical studies of top-down (predation) and bottom-up (plant quality) factors will be incorporated into an existing population model. In amore general perspective, the project will attempt to test a novel hypothesis about how interactions between plants, insect herbivores and their natural enemies vary with temperature.Qualifications Qualifications for this position is an exam in biology, agronomy, environmental science or similar subjects, with specialisation in ecology or entomology.Advanced level courses in population and community ecology, theoretical ecology, and entomology are meriting, as are documented abilities to do field work, to communicate well in written and spoken English, and to have an undergraduate thesis project in ecology connected to the position's subject. The candidate should have the ability to work independently, take own initiatives, and have an interest in combining basic and applied ecological questions.Driving license is necessary.
