PhD student in building services engineering

PhD student in building services engineering (solar and pellet heating) The position offers a regular full time employment contract as PhD student for a specified time period according to chapter 5 of the Swedish University regulations (Högskoleförordningen).Starting date for employment will be 15th June or other agreed starting time.The position will be located at SERC, in Borlänge, Sweden, with a period of up to 5 months at an industrial partner, located 20 km from Borlänge, although the accepted applicant will be registered at Chalmers University of Technology for the PhD degree. Work Tasks The PhD student will take part in PhD courses and meetings arranged within the joint SolNET project as well as other PhD courses required by Chalmers University of Technology, where the PhD degree will be given.The student will make research studies using measurements in the lab, modelling and detailed simulations as well as writing reports and articles about the studies.For more details of the SolNET project contents see under "current projects" at SERC's website, www.serc.se. Eligibility Requirements The PhD student must fulfil the general requirements of the Early Research Training Program of EU Marie-Curie.The main requirements here are: - The applicant can only have stayed a maximum of 12 months of the last 36 months within Sweden (apart from holidays).- The applicant must have been active in research activities for less than four years since the gaining of their last degree.- The applicant should be a non-Swede (there are exceptions for dual nationals and Swedish nationals who have been principally resident outside of Sweden over the last five years).For details of these requirements see the SolNET website, www.solar.uni-kassel.de/solnet under eligibility.Other Qualifications The applicant must be qualified to be registered as a PhD student at Chalmers University of Technology, building services engineering.These requirements are defined for Swedish degrees, but in the case of degrees obtained outside of Sweden an individual assessment is made.In general a minimum of 4 years of university studies is required, including a project of at least 30 ECTS.The subject area should be one of the following: civil or mechanical engineering, electrical/electronic engineering, applied physics and chemical engineering.Good written and spoken English is essential as is a good understanding of basic thermodynamics and heat transfer.Previous knowledge of or experience with solar heating and/or biomass systems is desired.Experience with modelling and detailed simulation tools such as TRNSYS is of benefit.The applicant should have a strong motivation and have good communication skills.The applicant must also be prepared to travel to courses and meetings within Sweden and Europe.Information Full information about the whole SolNET project can be found at the website www.solar.uni-kassel.de/solnet.You will find all details about the employment on Högskolan Dalarnas website www.du.se/ledigatjanster.Application The special SolNET application form needs to be used and send in to SolNET office.Follow the instructions on the website www.solar.uni-kassel.de/solnet.Final application date is 1st May 2006.
