MDH in Eskilstuna and Västerås is one of Sweden?s biggest university colleges with its 14 000 students and 900 employees. It has a long tradition of cooperating with society and has entered strategic agreements with both the public and the private sector. Most study programmes fall into four main areas: economy, health and welfare, education, and technology. With its research, which often takes the form of co-production on the regional, national and global levels, MDH aims to generate useful solutions for societal development. In 1999, MDH was the world?s first university to be environmentally certified, and in 2006, it was the first higher education institution in Sweden to be certified for its work environment.
The research profile DPAC targets dependable platforms for autonomous systems and control. The profile started in 2015 and will continue until 2023. It strengthens the interdisciplinary collaboration between the four research groups Safety-critical engineering, Formal modelling and analysis, Model-based engineering, and Robotics and avionics, within the research direction Embedded Systems at Mälardalen University (MDH).
DPAC performs research in predictability and dependability in parallel architectures, autonomous systems and control, and design methodologies. DPAC has a wide industrial participation, of companies such as Volvo, Saab, ABB, etc.
Position description
We are offering a PhD student position in the area of design methodologies and formal analysis of autonomous and (distributed) control systems, within the DPAC project. This PhD student position focuses on research in one or more of the following areas: (i) formal modeling of autonomous, cooperative systems and distributed control systems, (ii) developing / applying methods for design assurance of such systems, and (iii) analysis of dependable platforms and systems.
As a PhD student, you will spend a minimum of 80% of your time on research studies. The rest will be spent on educational and/or administrative duties.
The position is limited to a maximum of 5 years (4 years of full time studies).
Qualifications
Only those who are or have been admitted to third-cycle courses and study programmes at a higher education may be appointed to doctoral studentships. For futher information see Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100).
To qualify as a PhD student, you should have a master's level degree with a solid documented background in embedded systems, computer science or computer/software engineering. You may apply even if you have not completed your degree, but plan on doing so before the PhD student position starts.
The position requires sound verbal and written communication skills in English.
Assessement criteria
A selection will be made among qualified applicants on the basis of the ability to benefit from doctoral education. We will use the following assessment criteria:
1. Analytical skills
2. Documented subject knowledge of relevance to the area of research
3. Other documented knowledge or experience that may be relevant to doctoral studies within DPAC, e.g. previous industry experience
4. Communication skills and ability to work both individually and in teams with researchers from both academia and industry
The qualifications of the applicants will be evaluated on an overall basis.
