Information about the project
The successful candidate will work in the project "Logging of electric vehicles - characterization of charging patterns and grid impacts " with the aim to increase the understanding of charging and driving patterns of electric vehicles (EVs) and use the new knowledge to investigate how EV charging can contribute to flexibiity in the electricity system.
The PhD position on offer will join a team of senior researchers, postdocs and PhD students dedicated to research with the aim to identify and evaluate different pathways toward sustainable energy and transport systems. In the project charging and driving data will be collected and analysed from 360 randomly chosen EV owners in Sweden. The PhD project is unique in terms of the number of electric vehicles being logged and that these are distributed geographically across Sweden. The PhD position will analyze capacity limitations in the local electricity grid when adding EV charging using the collected data together with analysing how the battery capacity is affected by the charging pattern from the different EVs. The PhD work will also develop and apply energy systems and power systems modeling to analyse how a strong ramp-up of electric vehicles can be integrated in the electricity system and the electric grid. These modeling builds on models which have been developed over several years within the research group at Energy Technology.
The project is funded by the Swedish Electromobility Centre, which is a leading national research centre for electromobility. The project will be performed in co-operation with Volvo Cars and CEVT.
Major responsibilities

You are expected to write a licentiate thesis within 2-3 years and defend your doctoral thesis within 4-5 years.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must have a master's level degree corresponding to at least 240 higher education (ECTS) credits in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Environmental science, Civil or Environmental Engineering, Engineering Physics or equivalent. Excellent writing and communication skills in English is required. Fluent in Swedish is a merit. Familiarity with algebraic modeling languages used for linear programming (e.g. Julia/JuMP, Python/Pyomo, AMPL, MATLAB, GAMS) is mandatory.
Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of 5 years.
