Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment
The Department of Aquatic Sciences and Assessment (www.slu.se/vatten-miljo) is focused on applied environmental research, and has a national responsibility for environmental monitoring and assessment of lakes and watercourses in Sweden. Research at the department encompasses aquatic ecology and biodiversity, geochemistry and hydrology, as well as aquatic ecotoxicology and environmental chemistry.

Developing innovative treatment techniques for materials and groundwater contaminated with PFASs
Description:
This PhD position is one out of 15 positions offered within the ITN PERFORCE3, which is a Europe-wide multi-partner doctoral training programme in the field of PFASs.

The specific objectives of this PhD position are to 1) develop an innovative technique for ex-situ remediation of PFASs contaminated groundwater based on new innovative sorbents, 2) evaluate innovative treatment techniques including thermal treatment, washing and ultrasonic cleaning for infrastructure decontamination of materials contaminated with PFASs such as building materials and aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF) fire sprinkler systems, and 3) apply the developed treatment technique for the removal of PFASs.

In addition to short visits to partners and beneficiaries of the consortium, the position includes secondments at GE Healthcare in Uppsala, Sweden, and Vrije Universiteit (VU) Amsterdam, Netherlands.

Qualifications:
The successful applicant must 


• possess a MSc degree or civil engineering exam in environmental chemistry, analytical chemistry, environmental sciences, environmental engineering or a related field
• have excellent English language and communication skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing)
• have high motivation to pursue a PhD, independence and ability to collaborate and engage in a training network

Experience of analytical laboratory work with organic micropollutants (e.g. PFASs) using advanced mass spectrometry are valuable merits.

• At the time of appointment, applicants must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research careers. Full-time equivalent research experience is measured from the date when the applicant obtained the first degree entitling him/her to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in Sweden.
• At the time of appointment, applicants must not hold a doctoral degree or equivalent.
• Applicants can be of any nationality. However, applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Sweden for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the appointment. Short stays, such as holidays are not taken into account.

A person has basic eligibility for third cycle education if he or she has taken a second cycle qualification or has completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at second cycle education. Upper secondary school grades equivalent to English B/English 6 are a basic requirement.

Selection among applicants meeting the requirements is made with reference to written application including curriculum vitae, copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records, one copy of the dissertation for masters or undergraduate degree, a list of at least two references familiar with the applicant's qualifications, certified knowledge of the English language and an interview.
