Hereby advertises a position as
PhD student (licentiate)in Manufacturing Engineering
formally based at Department of Management and Engineering (IEI), Division of Manufacturing Engineering
Background
European companies are renowned for high quality complex products. However they face increasingly competition from emerging economies. There is therefore a high pressure to be able to deliver high complexity products on demand. This means providing highly customized products in very small batch sizes (ideally batch size 1). Traditional manufacturing execution system and conventional automation technology will not be able to support this increasing trend. Major European initiatives such as “Industrie 4.0” are supporting the development of the next generation of production systems based on cyber-physical systems and the industrial version of the internet-of-things (IoT). These new systems will be highly adaptable, tolerant to failures and disturbances, and plug-and-produce. At their core is a combination of artificial intelligence with distributed computation and cloud-based technologies which is expected to be the base for the 4th Industrial Revolution. The division of manufacturing engineering has been granted an European project entitled OpenMos – Open dynamic Manufacturing operating System for Smart Plug-and-Produce Automation Components, which will develop key technologies in the context of the industrial IoT.
We would like you to be part of this challenge!
Research focus
The Ph.D. candidate will develop knowledge in the area of cloud-based manufacturing execution system that are based in cyber-physical production components. This knowledge should advance the state-of-the-art in the area and be supported by significant technical and scientific developments related with the OpenMos project. The research will be carried out in close cooperation with an extensive consortium featuring 17 well known European companies and organizations and internationally recognized researchers in the area. Software engineering and development, system engineering and artificial intelligence are relevant disciplines that will support this research and the candidates are expected to have some background experience in at least one of these areas (equivalent to a master degree in Computer Science or similar).
The candidate is expected to develop a Swedish Licenciate thesis during the course of his work. After attaining it, the continuation for the PhD studies can be considered.
Duties
As a PhD student you will primarily devote yourself to your research. As a PhD student you are limited to work with education and administration up to 20 percent of full time.
