The Department of Biomedical Engineering conducts research, graduate and undergraduate teaching mainly within the Institute of Technology at LiU. The Department is a national center for research and education within biomedical engineering with an established international position. The research is based on needs within health care, and is performed in close collaboration with medical technology industry and health care researchers and clinicians. Divisions within the Department are: Biomedical Instrumentation, Physiological Measurements and Medical Informatics. The activities include the fields of biomedical optics, neuro engineering, medical image analysis, the electronic health record, systems biology, tissue engineering, ultra sound, bio acoustics, and the associated medical applications, covering skin physiology, the cardio vascular area and the brain.

The Center for Medical Image Science and Visualization (CMIV) at Linköping University has a long tradition in the developing image analysis tools for medical images and validating them through clinical studies. CMIV is renowned for its state-of-the-art methods for CT image reconstruction, multidimensional image filtering, multimodal registration, and advanced scientific visualization of medical images. At present, CMIV includes about 50 senior researchers and 40 doctoral students, and it has its own premises with state-of-the-art imaging and visualization equipment in Linköping University Hospital.

Duties
The doctoral student will mainly be involved in developing new tensorial techniques that can be applied to analysis of images acquired through different Magnetic Resonance and Computed Tomography imaging protocols with applications to the human circulatory, skeletal and nervous systems.

A doctoral student should mainly work on their doctoral thesis. A doctoral student could be expected to work with teaching and administration duties. Before graduation such assignments should not represent more than 20 percent of full time work.
Requirements
Applicants must hold a higher education degree at Master?s level, or having completed course requirements of at least 240 ECTS credits, including a minimum of 60 ECTS credits at Master?s level, or having acquired the equivalent skills and knowledge, abroad or domestically.

A strong background in mathematics is required for this position. Experience in image analysis is desirable, but not required. Highly motivated individuals with degrees in mathematics, physics, computer science or engineering are especially encouraged to apply. Admission will be made in connection with employment as a doctoral student.
