Dalarna University offers research and education linked to the research profile Complex Systems – Microdata Analysis amounting to some 60 researchers and PhD students. Dalarna University is now enrolling PhD students to a PhD programme in Microdata Analysis starting in the fall of 2016. The positions as a PhD student are full time, including a maximum of 20 % of departmental work. The position is for a licentiate degree with a possible extension to doctoral degree.

PhD positions are time-limited in accordance with the Higher Education Ordinance (HF 5 chapter). Start at September 1, 2016 or as agreed. Location is at Borlänge Campus.

The knowledge area
Microdata Analysis is a multidisciplinary field involving collection, modeling, compilation, and interpretation of large data sets, together with underlying algorithms, methods, and techniques, as well as its application to decision making. Microdata Analysis at Dalarna University is predominately applied to transport, infrastructure, retail, tourism, energy systems and industry. The PhD programme gives broad general knowledge and attractive specialist competence in Business intelligence and Business analytics, opening opportunities for both an academic career and work in e.g. research institutes, management or consulting. The programme is suited for applicants with a degree at the second-cycle level in disciplines such as computer science, informatics, geography, economics, engineering or statistics.

Qualifications
To be admitted to the programme of doctoral study in Microdata Analysis, the applicant must meet both the general and specific entry requirements.

General requirements:
1. a degree at advanced level
2. has completed course totalling at least 240 credits, including a minimum of 60 credits at advanced level, or
3. can demonstrate acquisition of equivalent skills in another way, either in or out of the country.

Specific requirements
Specific requirements for admission require a candidate to have passed at least five of the following courses (or equivalent):
- Entery course in database systems for Master in Business Intelligence, 7.5 credits, Ground Level 1
- Data Analysis and Statistics, 7.5 credits, First Cycle Level 1
- Introduction to artificial neural networks, 7.5 credits, Second Cycle Level 1
- Introduction to object oriented programming, 7.5 credits, First Cycle Level 1
- Mathematics for Microdata Analysis, 7.5 credits, First Cycle Level 2
- Microeconomics, 7.5 credits, First Cycle Level 1
- Optimization techniques and probability theory, 7.5 credits, Second Cycle Level 1

Applications from candidates who do not presently fill the qualifications, but will do so at the starting day of employment, will be taken into consideration.

Selection
The assessment of candidates is largely based on the quality of their master thesis. We also value if the applicant is self-guided, structured and stable. The selection is also based on problem-solving analytical skills and ability to set and work toward high goals. As doctoral studies will be performed within a research group good interpersonal skills are also required.

Selection of applicants will be made after qualitative overall assessment of their abilities to fulfill the duties in the employment.

Salary in according to the PhD fixed salary scale of Dalarna University.
