The Department of Mathematical Sciences at Chalmers University of Technology and the University of Gothenburg is the largest mathematics department in Sweden, with around 200 dedicated employees. Contract terms and what we offer


• The PhD-positions are fully funded from start
• As a PhD student at Chalmers, you are an employee and enjoy all employee benefits. Read more about working at Chalmers and our benefits for employees.
• As a PhD student, you will be enrolled in a graduate program at the Department of Mathematical Sciences. Please, read more about our graduate program here.
• The position is limited to four years, with the possibility to teach up to 20%, which extends the position to five years.
• A dynamic and inspiring working environment in the coastal city of Gothenburg. Gothenburg.
• A starting salary of 34,550 SEK per month (valid from May 25, 2025).

About the project
This PhD position focuses on the structure theory of operator algebras. The project is funded by the Swedish Research Council and supervised by Professor Hannes Thiel. Your role and responsibilities
As a PhD student in our team, you will:


• Join an inclusive and stimulating international research community.
• Deepen your expertise in operator algebras and related fields.
• Develop and communicate your ideas through written and oral presentations.
• Take part in departmental activities, including teaching responsibilities (approximately 20% of the role).
• Travel to conferences and events to share your work and connect with peers worldwide.

Who we are looking for
We encourage applications from individuals with diverse backgrounds who are passionate about mathematics. The ideal candidate will have:


• A strong academic background in mathematics, demonstrated by excellent course grades and undergraduate thesis work.
• A completed master’s degree or 4-year bachelor’s degree in mathematics by the time the position begins.
• Knowledge of functional analysis.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills in English.
