The Department of Romance Studies and Classics is placed within the Faculty of Humanities, has about 70 employees and ca 1,000 students per year. The main research areas are Literature, Romance Linguistics and Second Language Acquisition and Multilingualism.

You may participate in The Faculty's Doctoral School, offering themes and courses characterized by interdisciplinarity and cooperation across subject borders. It gives the opportunity to improve your education thanks to the interchange with the community of PhD students from other areas and departments.

Project description
The doctoral dissertation must be carried out in the Romance languages for which we offer education: French, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish (literature or linguistics). You can also choose Romance languages general orientation.


Qualification requirements
In order to be admitted, the applicant must fulfill both the general and specific entry requirements, which must be met by the deadline for application.

To meet the general entry requirements, the applicant must have completed a second-cycle degree, completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 in the second cycle, or have acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.

To meet the specific entry requirements, the general syllabus stipulates that:


• the successful candidate has passed advanced level courses of at least 30 credits in French, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish including a degree project of at least 15 credits
• the candidate possesses knowledge of English equivalent to level 6 (does not apply to students who have undergone university education with English as a requirement).

The requirements must be met also by persons who acquired corresponding skills within or outside the country.

Selection
Selection among the eligible applicants is based on the capacity to benefit from postgraduate education according to the following criteria:


• General previous education. The assessment takes into consideration their depth and broadness.
• Earlier scientific production. Based on first-cycle and second-cycle degree projects and, if applicable, other scientific production, the capacity is assessed as follows: critical ability, analytical ability, creativity, independence and scientific diligence. The time aspect is considered, i.e. how the applicant has demonstrated the ability to complete previous scientific assignments within given time frame. Assessment is also made of the applicant's academic development from a comparison between scientific productions.
• Research plan. An account of the intended research area must be given, containing formulation of problem(s) and a description of how the research will be conducted. The plan is assessed based on relevance, originality, feasibility within the given time frame (four years full-time studies for a doctoral degree and two years full-time studies for a licentiate degree).
• Cooperation. The cooperative ability is assessed, for example, on references, certificates or interviews.
• Other. There are strict requirements regarding the applicant’s ability to adequately express oneself in academic French, Italian, Portuguese or Spanish. Assessment is based on previous scientific works.
• In the admission and selection to a third-cycle programme in Romance languages general orientation or specialization in French, Italian, Portuguese, or Spanish the department board must consider the regulations of the Faculty of Humanities.

About the position
A doctoral student has a fixed-term employment according to Chapter 5 of the Higher Education Ordinance (1993:100), and only a person who will be or has already been admitted to a third-cycle programme may be appointed. The employment period may not be longer than corresponding to a full-time doctoral education of four years. Doctoral students should primarily devote themselves to their own education, but may engage in teaching, research and administration to a maximum of 20 % of a full time employement.

A new employment as a doctoral student can only be one year. It can then be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time.
