PhD student in Secure and cognitive photonic communication networks

We are seeking a bright and motivated student to join us in shaping the field of cybersecurity in photonic communication networks. This is a unique opportunity to advance the security level of critical ICT infrastructure by applying machine learning techniques and developing new networking paradigms. Join this thriving area and become a part of a dynamic international community including European projects TeraFlow and AI-NET-PROTECT!

Project description
The Internet and the overall development of the digital information society is supported by the optical networks as the underlying critical comunication infrastructure. To enable the digital evolution and the vital network services with stringent performance requirements, optical networks need to be resilient and secure. To this end, the network should maintain a high degree of situational awareness and self-adaptability.

This project will investigate the achievable levels of secure and automated operation of optical networks by addressing the related theoretical and practical challenges. Cognitive network management based on data analytics and machine learning techniques will be at the center of this project. Security-enhancing optical network design and autonomous incident remediation mechanisms shall be developed to guarantee attack-resilience, privacy and trust. Multi-domain and multi-layer networking aspects will be investigated towards achieving end-to-end trustworthiness. Novel solutions fundamental for achieving situational awareness and self-defense from malicious attacks will be devised and their usage in testbed settings will be demonstrated. The research will be a part of large international efforts in the frame of European projects TeraFlow (5g-ppp.eu/teraflow/) and AI-NET-PROTECT (www.celticnext.eu/project-ai-net-protect/).

Information about the division
The position is within the Communication Systems group at the division of Communications, Antennas, and Optical Networks, department of Electrical Engineering. Our research is focused on theory, algorithms, and hardware for communication systems and networks. We study systems such as the high-performance optical networks, next generation wireless cellular communication systems, vehicular communication to enable certain important vehicular traffic safety applications, and hardware-constrained communications. Our research is diverse in nature and includes fundamental and application-driven as well as disciplinary and multidisciplinary projects.

Major responsibilities
Your major responsibility as PhD student is to pursue your own doctoral studies. You are expected to develop your own scientific concepts and communicate the results of your research in major journals and conferences.  Most of the research will be conducted in cross-disciplinary teams. In addition to the research responsibilities, the position includes teaching or other departmental duties of about 10 percent of full time.

Contract terms
Full-time temporary employment. The position is limited to a maximum of five years.

Qualifications
You should have a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics, Computing, Engineering Physics or equivalent corresponding to at least 240 higher education credits, with excellent knowledge of communication networks and mathematical modeling. High grades in the core courses are required (we generally accept only the top 10% of students, from well-ranked universities). Skills in mathematical modeling and analysis are essential. Experience in optical communications is not required, but you should have an interest in applying your skills to optical systems.

Good communication skills and fluency in English are essential, as are good programming skills. Previous experiences in research, publications, and teaching are also advantageous.
