PhD student in Soil Science/Ecology

Arbetsbeskrivning

Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences Department of Forest Ecology and Management in Umeå 1 PhD student in the research education subject: Soil Science/Ecology Controls of the annual net carbon exchange in a boreal mire Peatforming ecosystems in the northern hemisphere store about a fourth of the global soil carbon pool and emit 10% of the annual emission of methane to the atmosphere.Northern mire ecosystems are considered to be most sensitive to global change. This project aims at unravel the relative importance of net carbon fixation (photosynthesis), soil CO2 emission, methane emission and water runoff export of carbon (CO2, CH4 and organic carbon) for the Net Annual Carbon Balance of a boreal mire, Degerö Stormyr. The work will be based on existing instrumentation for monitoring of CO2 (eddy-covariance measurements, 2001 onwards), methane (static chambers, 2004 onwards) and water runoff C export (continuous discharge measurements and regular water sampling, 2004 onwards). Also more specific measurement campaigns or experiments may be included to address specific questions on the environmental controls on the different C-flux components. Qualifications: At least a BSc in Soil Science, Ecology, Biogeochemistry, or comparable.Writing skills in English.Driving license is required.Documented experience from scientific work with micrometeorology, ecohydrology, biogeochemistry or soil microbiology is a merit. SLU is an Equal Opportunity Employer.A person has basic eligibility for third level education if he or she has taken a second level qualification or has completed course requirements of at least 240 higher education credits, including at least 60 higher education credits at second level. Those who met the requirements for general eligibility before July 1st, 2007, i.e.had completed a programme of higher education for at least 120 credits or the equivalent, will continue to do so until the end of 2015." Selection among applicants meeting the requirements is made with reference to written application including curriculum vitae, copies of degrees and transcripts of academic records, one copy of the dissertation for masters or undergraduate degree, a list of at least two references familiar with the applicant's qualifications, certified knowledge of the English language and an interview.
